Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Cost Accounting Manager to lead cost accounting, inventory accounting, and technical accounting initiatives within a complex operational environment. This highly visible role partners with Finance, Operations, Supply Chain, and Executive Leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting, strengthen internal controls, and provide strategic insights that drive business performance and profitability.

Job Details

Key Responsibilities

Lead all aspects of cost accounting, including standard costing, inventory valuation, absorption costing, overhead allocations, and variance analysis.
Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes related to inventory, manufacturing costs, and operational accounting.
Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, financial analyses, and supporting schedules.
Oversee inventory accounting, including cycle count programs, physical inventories, reserve calculations, inventory roll-forwards, and excess/obsolete inventory analyses.
Analyze manufacturing and operational variances, including labor, material, overhead, purchase price, and production volume variances.
Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and support technical accounting research related to inventory, fixed assets, lease accounting, revenue recognition, and other complex accounting matters.
Partner with external auditors and assist with annual audits, SOX compliance, and internal control reviews.
Lead standard cost updates, BOM reviews, routing analyses, and cost roll processes.
Support financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and long-range strategic initiatives.
Drive process improvement initiatives, automation efforts, and ERP system enhancements to improve reporting accuracy and operational efficiency.
Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and documentation supporting cost accounting and inventory controls.
Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Technical Accounting Responsibilities

Research and document accounting positions in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
Prepare technical accounting memorandums and policy documentation.
Evaluate accounting impacts of new transactions, operational changes, and business initiatives.

Support accounting for:

ASC 842 Lease Accounting
Fixed Asset Accounting and Capitalization Policies
Inventory Valuation and Lower of Cost or Net Realizable Value Analysis
Revenue Recognition Considerations (ASC 606)
Internal Controls and SOX Compliance
Cost Absorption Methodologies
Inventory Reserves and Excess/Obsolete Inventory
Purchase Accounting and Business Integration Activities (if applicable)

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
CPA and/or CMA strongly preferred.
8+ years of progressive accounting experience with significant cost accounting responsibility.
Prior leadership experience managing accounting teams.
Strong technical accounting knowledge and experience applying U.S. GAAP.
Experience in manufacturing, distribution, consumer products, industrial, or other inventory-intensive environments.
Advanced ERP experience and strong Microsoft Excel skills.
Experience with inventory management systems, standard costing environments, and operational finance partnerships.

Preferred Experience

Standard costing and absorption accounting environments.
ERP implementations, upgrades, or system optimization projects.
Multi-location inventory and manufacturing operations.
SOX compliance and public company reporting environments.
Financial modeling, KPI development, and operational analytics.
