Job Title: Senior Construction Project Manager

Job Description

This Senior Construction Project Manager role oversees a large, multi‑year K-12 construction program for the Elmira School District, with full responsibility for planning, managing, and executing complex projects from start to finish. The position is based in Elmira, NY and focuses on delivering high‑quality work in strict accordance with contract documents while maximizing profit, supporting field operations, and serving as a primary client‑facing representative for the school district.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the overall planning, management, and execution of assigned construction projects, which may include one major project, multiple concurrent projects, or select trade packages on large‑scale programs.
  • Take full responsibility for project success, including profit and loss, by effectively managing schedules, billings, direct job material costs, and labor costs to achieve targeted profitability.
  • Ensure all projects are executed in strict accordance with contract documents while maintaining high standards of quality and maximizing profit opportunities.
  • Support and collaborate closely with the Project Superintendent to execute the work successfully and resolve project issues in the field.
  • Establish and maintain strong client‑facing relationships, including leading and participating in meetings with the school district and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure a safe work environment on all assigned projects in partnership with the Superintendent, promoting and reinforcing safety policies and practices.
  • Perform careful upfront project planning, including the development of a critical path method (CPM) schedule to guide project execution.
  • Participate in Project Hand‑off Meetings with Estimating, Accounting, Safety, and the Superintendent to review scope, budget, schedule, and risk items.
  • Participate in Constructability Review Meetings when requested by Estimating, providing input on site logistics, sequence of construction, material selections, and required details.
  • Manage the purchasing of subcontracts and purchase orders, ensuring that scopes are clearly defined and aligned with project requirements.
  • Track project buyout to confirm that procurement aligns with budgets and supports overall project profitability.
  • Establish a schedule of values for billing, prepare billing documentation, and submit it for review and approval by the assigned Project Executive prior to client submission.
  • Develop and maintain a CPM schedule in collaboration with the Superintendent, updating it as needed to reflect actual progress and changes.
  • Coordinate with internal teams such as Estimating, Accounting, Safety, and field staff to ensure seamless project delivery and effective communication.
  • Provide leadership and direction to any designated Project Administrator supporting the project, delegating tasks and overseeing their work as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in construction project management with responsibility for end‑to‑end delivery of complex projects.
  • Strong background in managing large‑scale construction projects, preferably in K-12 or similar institutional environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project financials, including profit and loss, scheduling, billing, and control of material and labor costs.
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining CPM (Critical Path Method) project schedules.
  • Ability to interpret and execute work in accordance with contract documents while upholding high quality standards.
  • Capability to work in a client‑facing capacity, including leading meetings with school district representatives and other stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with Project Superintendents and cross‑functional teams such as Estimating, Accounting, and Safety.
  • Proficiency in purchasing and managing subcontracts and purchase orders, including tracking project buyout.
  • Solid organizational and planning skills to ensure projects start and progress successfully.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment on all project sites.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with K-12 school district construction projects or similar public institutional work.
  • Familiarity with constructability reviews, including site logistics planning, sequencing of construction, material selection, and detailing.
  • Ability to develop schedules of values for billing and coordinate approvals with project executives.
  • background in working with multi‑disciplinary project teams that include Estimating, Accounting, Safety, and field operations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build trust with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • Leadership experience overseeing project administrators or support staff.
  • Experience with long‑duration, high‑value capital projects.

Work Environment

The role is primarily based in a professional office environment in Elmira, NY, with regular collaboration across project management, estimating, accounting, safety, and field operations teams. The Senior Construction Project Manager works from the client office and conducts occasional site visits to active construction locations within the Elmira School District. Site visits involve working closely with the Superintendent and field staff in an active construction setting, requiring adherence to safety protocols and appropriate site attire and personal protective equipment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elmira, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $67.00/hr.
