Job Description and Duties:

Effective July 1, 2025, in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented. PLP 2025 requires each full-time employee in Bargaining Unit 20 and related Excluded, Exempt and Statutory Exempt employees, will have their base salary reduced by 3 percent and will receive 5 PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes. Part-time employees are subject to the same conditions as full-time employees, on a prorated basis equivalent to their time-base. Permanent intermittent employees are subject to the same condition as full-time employees, based on the number of hours worked in the pay period.

This is the advanced journey level in this series. Incumbent, under general medical direction, is in charge of and performs technical work in a small clinical laboratory or may also work in a large clinical laboratory under the direction of a supervising clinical laboratory technologist and placed in charge of a specialized laboratory unit or act as general assistant to the supervisor and give technical direction to other technologists and assistants.

Responsibilities:

As head of a small laboratory: confers with medical personnel, coordinates laboratory operations with medical staff requirements, and plans and is responsible for the technical clinical laboratory program; develops and installs necessary changes in laboratory procedures; estimates and orders necessary laboratory supplies, materials and equipment.

Under direction of a supervising clinical Laboratory Technologist in a large laboratory: provides technical direction to and works with a staff of technologists and assistants; recommends necessary changes in laboratory procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of a valid California State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or a license of equal or higher level issued by the State Department of Health Services. (Applicants who do not meet these requirements will be admitted to the examination, but must secure the required license before they will be considered eligible for appointment.)

One year of experience in comprehensive laboratory work which has involved making laboratory analyses.

Working Conditions:

Travel may be required. Position(s) eligible for hybrid telework, must be in accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy and will be required to report to the office as needed/required. The successful candidate must reside in California upon the start of a telework arrangement, pursuant to Government Code sections 14200-14203.
