Summary:
We are seeking a senior-level backend BI developer to support the modernization of an enterprise data platform. This role focuses on migrating from a traditional on-prem BI stack to a cloud-based analytics environment and building scalable, secure data models that support reporting and self-service analytics.
This position works closely with business stakeholders and technical teams to translate reporting needs into reliable data structures and efficient analytical solutions. Occasional travel to operational sites may be required.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Business & Technical Collaboration
- Partner with business users and subject matter experts to clarify reporting needs, often in situations where requirements are incomplete or evolving.
- Translate business questions into technical data models, metrics, and reporting structures.
- Provide technical direction and architectural input to analytics and reporting initiatives.
- Coordinate with engineering, analytics, and platform teams to ensure alignment on data standards and delivery timelines.
Data Engineering & Platform Work
- Design, develop, and maintain data warehouse schemas and semantic models.
- Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest data from a variety of structured and semi-structured sources.
- Work with relational databases, cloud data services, APIs, flat files, and user-managed data sources.
- Ensure data solutions adhere to security, governance, and architectural standards.
- Monitor and maintain data quality; identify inconsistencies and work with source system owners to resolve issues.
- Support existing reporting and analytics workloads while contributing to platform modernization efforts.
- Create and maintain complex SQL queries and analytical calculations used in dashboards and reports.
- Document data models, transformations, and architectural decisions.
- Stay current on cloud data and analytics technologies through ongoing learning.
Required Experience & Skills
- 8+ years of experience in BI, data engineering, or data warehousing roles.
- Strong understanding of data warehouse architecture, dimensional modeling, and analytics design.
- Hands-on experience with:
- SQL Server (on-prem) and Azure SQL–based platforms
- Cloud-based data environments
- ETL/ELT design and implementation
- Proficiency in SQL and experience developing complex analytical queries.
- Experience working within DevOps or source-controlled deployment environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfortable working in environments with changing priorities and ambiguous requirements.
- Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, Data Factory, Databricks, and/or SSIS.
- Familiarity with Azure Data Lake and related Azure services.
- Experience integrating data via APIs.
- Exposure to manufacturing, operations, or supply-chain data.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines for data solutions.
- Familiarity with ERP data (e.g., finance or operations systems).
- Experience developing DAX and Power Query (M) for analytical models.
