Position Description

TARGET ENTRY SALARY: $117,138 - $152,279 DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS

Under limited direction, the Senior Assistant City Attorney performs a variety of professional level duties and responsibilities involving the delivery of legal services of varying complexity. Legal services include direct assistance to the City Attorney on special projects or assignments. Work involves the review and/or preparation of legal documents, the preparation of legal opinions, and the preparation and review of resolutions, ordinances, and other proposed legislation. Preferred responsibilities include real estate transactions, representation of the City on the Code Enforcement Board, and construction related matters.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducts, performs, and assists in various legal research concerning legal problems or projects.

  • Performs assignments independently and makes legal determinations in matters of substantial importance.

  • Prepares or reviews resolutions, ordinances, and other proposed legislation of a complex or unique nature.

  • Prepares or reviews documents of a complex nature.

  • Negotiates, prepares and reviews purchase and sale agreements, contracts, leases and easement documents.

  • Conducts investigations independently and negotiations on behalf of the City to resolve legal problems.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the City Attorney.

Minimum Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:

A valid State drivers license is required.

Possession of a State of Florida license as a practicing attorney and admission to the Florida Bar.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor Degree or equivalent with admission to the Florida Bar PLUS Five (5) years of professional experience as an attorney in the public sector, particularly at the local government level or an equivalent combination of education.
