Senior Analytical Chemist

Department: Production Support
FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Status: Full Time
Reports To: Technical Manager
Schedule: 40+ hours/week; standard hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Travel: Between sites as needed
Supervises: Analytical Chemist I & II

Position Summary

The Senior Analytical Chemist is responsible for developing, qualifying, and transferring analytical test methods for raw materials, intermediates, and finished products. This individual will lead complex chemical analyses, validate new methods, and provide technical expertise in direct support of manufacturing and R&D operations.

The role requires collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, oversight of analytical method transfers under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and ensuring compliance with federal regulations and quality management systems. Additional responsibilities include troubleshooting analytical instrumentation, mentoring junior staff, interpreting analytical data, and supporting project and production decisions.

Essential Functions
Develop, validate, and transfer complex analytical methods for raw materials and finished products
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation including HPLC, GC, DSC, FTIR, UV-Vis, GPC, particle size analyzers, NIR, and auto-titrators
Analyze data, manage investigation studies (OOS), and ensure compliance with regulatory and quality guidelines
Execute analytical method development plans and maintain accurate test method documentation
Collaborate with technical teams on research projects, non-conforming materials, new product introductions, and non-standard testing
Coordinate and advise laboratory personnel on test procedures and physical property analyses
Troubleshoot analytical and physical testing issues to ensure accurate and timely results
Provide off-hours support to laboratory supervisors and technicians when testing issues impact production schedules
Prepare laboratory summary reports to support compliance with regulatory, quality, and customer requirements
Troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate, and support preventive maintenance for laboratory equipment
Identify instrumentation improvements or replacement opportunities and provide budgetary justifications to management
Coordinate and manage third-party service contracts as needed
Support operational needs that may occasionally extend beyond standard business hours
Education & Experience
Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry with 5+ years of related experience preferred
OR
Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry with 10+ years of related experience
Experience with analytical method development, validation, and technical transfers preferred
Skills & Abilities
Technical Skills
Strong proficiency with MS Word and Excel
LIMS experience is a plus
Excellent laboratory skills and strong mechanical aptitude
Broad knowledge of organic chemistry and chemical transformations
Expert-level knowledge of chromatography and spectroscopy techniques
Hands-on expertise with analytical instrumentation including GC, HPLC, GPC, DSC, FTIR, UV-Vis, pH, particle size analyzers, and auto-titrators
