The Prince George's County Police Department is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Security Officer I, grade P11 position in the Office of the Chief/Protective Services Unit.

About the Position

This is entry-level, responsible security work involving the protection of County facilities. Incumbents in this class of work patrol and monitor an assigned facility to prevent security breaches, theft, vandalism and personal injury to visitors. Tasks include ensuring that facilities are secured and that security systems are operational; observing, resolving and reporting any unusual conditions or activities; monitoring and controlling visitor and employee access to buildings, grounds and parking areas, offering information, directing or escorting parties to appropriate destinations and unlocking doors and gates. Work is performed independently and in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures. Supervision is received through daily instruction from the Security Officer Supervisor or higher-level supervisor.

  • Maintains security at the County Administration Building and other designated county facilities through the use of a variety of security related technology, knowledge of the facilities, customer service and observation skills.
  • Directs and controls the flow of visitors and employees to security checkpoints as required and instructing visitors to place handbags, briefcases, and packages to be scanned by x-ray machine.
  • Provides customer service and assistance to visitors and employees within the County Administration Building and other assigned county facilities.
  • Participates in and trains with the Protective Services Unit to gain maintain and instill knowledge and skills in various phases of physical security using and participating in lectures, practical exercise, and testing methods.
  • Remains observant, vigilant and aware of surroundings.
  • Conforms to all uniform and grooming regulations set forth by the Prince Georges County Police Department.
  • Displays considerable knowledge of the physical configuration of the facility assigned.
  • Provides security for county facilities by patrolling areas and securing doors, windows, and access areas.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact courteously and effectively with others and act quickly, calmly, and effectively in stressful emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Six (6) months of work experience involving public contact in a variety of circumstances, preferably in a security-related role

Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Highly eligible candidates will have the following criteria:

  • Experience operating and monitoring a variety of security related technology to include; x-ray machines, walk through metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors, and surveillance cameras as a means of scanning visitors for weapons and other contrabands.

General Plan Information:

The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.

After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
