This position is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the staff, patrons, and library premises by patrolling, monitoring surveillance, controlling access, and responding to incidents. The 2026 starting salary is $19.49 per hour. Schedule may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Schedule flexibility is essential.

The Position:

Under the general direction of the Public Services Manager, the Security Guard, known in the library as a Patron Relations Assistant, will be required to perform any of the following tasks:

• Connect and build collaborative relationships with patrons and community organizations. • Educate library users on appropriate behaviors and enforce all facility rules, policies, and procedures. • Resolve conflicts, elicit cooperation, and negotiate solutions without resorting to unneeded conflict. • Provide security for all areas of the Waukesha Public library grounds to maintain a safe and inviting atmosphere for all patrons and staff. • Assist in crisis situations and emergencies and investigate and handle disturbances, including contacting law enforcement and emergency personnel when necessary. • Intercede when patrons fail to comply with the law and/or Library rules and policies; explain rules and policies to patrons; solicit patron cooperation and compliance; enforce correction of infractions through verbal warnings; de-escalate sensitive situations. • Observe, identify, and report security and/or safety conditions and concerns and remove patrons who are in violation of the Library Code of Conduct; recommend procedures and methods to prevent security issues. • Work with Library staff to monitor, recognize, and resolve security problems and keep the Public Services Manager informed of activities and/or problems. • Obtain, record, and maintain necessary documentation, record and report incidents and events. • Serve as the liaison between Library staff, police agencies, social service organizations, contracted security personnel, and the public. • Exercise excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills and communicate clearly, persuasively, and diplomatically with Library staff and the public while enforcing security rules, often under stressful situations.

Requirements:

Graduation from high school or GED plus 2 years of experience in law enforcement or security services; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability, and skills:

• Knowledge of public safety and security, the use of general office equipment including computers and relevant software, relevant safety and security information, resources available to assist patrons with mental health issues, substance abuse, unstable housing, exclusion issues, trauma, or other life challenges, first Aid/CPR (Preferred). • Ability to respond to the needs and interests of all library patrons, prepare clear and concise reports and recommendations, establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public, follow directions and work with minimal supervision, be firm and respond quickly and decisively, exercise good judgment in demanding situations, learn basic policies and procedures of the library, regularly walk around and patrol the library, anticipate potential disruptive behavior and safety or security threats and take preventative action, and think quickly and critically. • Skills in oral and written communications, public relations, organization, and attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Physical Demands:

Work is performed mostly indoors. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, prolonged visual concentration, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and listen, and use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
