General Definition of WorkThe Section 504 Counselor, under general supervision, performs intermediate-level work with limited decision-making discretion providing coordination and case management for Section 504 services. Section 504 is a federal civil rights law under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits disability discrimination in any program receiving federal funds and requires public schools to provide a "free appropriate public education" (FAPE) and reasonable accommodations to students with physical or mental impairments. Position facilitates identification, eligibility determination, and plan development processes for students requiring accommodations under Section 504.
