The Seasonal Southmost Technician performs and participates in preserve operations and management and native plant nursery propagation, maintenance and seed collection. This is a 24-26-week duration, full-time position. This position will be based at the Lennox Foundation Southmost Preserve, near Brownsville, TX. The preserve and work will be conducted on TNC and partner properties, primarily along the U.S. / Mexico Border and south of the Border Wall. Periodic travel for work operations in other areas of the Rio Grande Valley, and the state, may be needed.

The Seasonal Southmost Technician will be expected to 1) assist with all aspects of the native plant nursery operations, including native seed propagation, plant bed/band preparation, and seed collection and processing; 2) assist with volunteer and interns to accomplish nursery operations; 3) become familiar with and operate various hand tool equipment and machinery; 4) work with TNC staff, partner organizations, and volunteers to accomplish restoration and stewardship objectives; 5) assist in improving and maintaining preserve facilities.

The Seasonal Southmost Technician may work long hours independently in isolated settings while making day-to-day decisions as delegated by a supervisor. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.

What You'll Bring:
  • High school diploma and 1 year's training in science-related field or related experience in botany, nursery operations, or land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience in nursery operations and growing seedlings
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
Desired Qualifications
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 1 - 2 years' experience in nursery operations or land management.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of local natural systems.
  • Specialized experience with Thornforest plant identification and animal species to complete preserve management activities. (e.g.: nursery operations, ISA arborist, etc.)
  • PC familiarity, including database and/or GIS knowledge.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $20 - $22 hourly rate. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
