Major Duties:

  • Assist journeymen in the installation and repair of plumbing lines, waste lines, plumbing fixtures, valve pumps, and controls. Sweats, glues, and joins a variety of materials together (copper, steel, aluminum, and PVC).
  • Assist journeymen in the construction, fabrication, and repairs of various facilities using lumber, cement block, and formed steel reinforced concrete. Installs and repairs doors, windows, siding, flooring, sheetrock, and other finish materials.
  • Operates motor vehicles, forklifts, and boats to 45 feet. Use zero-turn mowers and weed eaters to maintain park grounds on remote islands. Empties trash and recycling bins throughout the park. Removes old stumps, nonnative plants, and rehabilitate the grounds.
  • Assist with safety measures and programs by tracking chemical usage, inputting data into the systems, SDS tracking sheets, and chemical inventory. Janitorial duties to include trash removal, and cleaning office/public spaces and restrooms.
  • Assist HVAC and electrical mechanics with general maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of HVAC, electrical systems, and fixtures. Repair and replace damaged sections of the boardwalk located on Convoy Point and Boca Chita.

  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: defined as 85 miles or approximate driving time under normal conditions of 120 min from the Metropolitan areas of Miami-Dade County, Florida. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)

I have experience performing carpentry or woodworking jobs, such as painting and maintaining road signs, cutting and fastening boards, drywall installation, window and door installation, roofing, and building concrete frames. I have prepped and painted interior and exterior surfaces. I have performed electrical installations, troubleshooting, and repairs such as installing fixtures, replacing fuses and light bulbs, and installing light switches and outlets. Performed basic plumbing work such as installing fixtures, replacing washers in faucets, identifying the source of leaks, and unclogging sinks, etc. Performed sanitation services such as cleaning sinks, toilets, sweeping and mopping floors, collecting trash and debris, cleaning culverts, and ensuring that there are adequate supplies of soap, towels and toilet paper for a public restroom. I have operated motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, crew cab trucks, and 4-wheel drive utility type vehicles for picking up supplies and transporting personnel, equipment, and materials. Safely performed landscaping and grounds maintenance such as cutting grass with push/riding mowers, using weed eaters, power blowers, chainsaws and pruners. Performed masonry jobs such as pouring and finishing concrete, patching potholes, and using mortar, tile, brick or cinder-block in construction applications. I can lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected the display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach requiring the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
