Seasonal Maintenance Worker - Parks & Forestry

Description: Perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks involving the construction, care, and maintenance of our park landscaped areas. The City of Plymouth is now accepting applications for Seasonal Parks and Forestry Maintenance workers to join our Parks and Recreation Department. This is a great opportunity to gain relevant municipal experience and a very good job for those seeking short-term employment. This position is scheduled up to 40 hours per week from April to October, weather dependent.

Essential Functions:

• Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers. • Interact with others in a manner that is professional and inspires open communication. • Help to create and maintain a respectful workplace culture and champions diversity and inclusion. • Perform the following turf grass maintenance in parks, trails, and other city-owned property: • Mow and trim turf • Top dress, aerification, seed, and sod • Apply fertilizer and chemicals per specifications • Inspect and maintain irrigation systems • Prepare athletic fields • Layout and paint field lines • Drag and prepare infield and pitching mounds • Install and inspect goals and nets • Inspect and repair play areas • Perform tree-care maintenance in parks, open spaces, and along trails • Trim, prune weeds, water, fertilize, spray trees and forested areas • Remove and pull chips, wood waste, and undesirable vegetation • Make site preparations, handle and install trees and shrubs in reforestation efforts • Assist in trail and boulevard safety clearance program • Maintain landscape and assist in the annual/perennial program • Prepare planting sites and install materials according to design • Maintain prairies, open spaces, wetlands, and other natural areas • Water, weed, transplant, thin, mulch new and established plant beds • Fertilize, spray, prune, cultivate, deadhead, collect seeds, and maintain plants • Complete routine maintenance of parks, buildings, play areas, and trails • Repair or report items requiring repair (i.e., broken benches, bleachers, play structures, holes) as needed • Perform minor, plumbing, carpentry, and painting • Wash, wax, and paint interior and exterior surfaces in park buildings • Pick up and dispose of trash and glass • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: • Valid drivers license with a good driving record • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, as well as to communicate effectively orally • Ability to make sound decisions and independent judgments on projects assigned • Knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in general maintenance work and skill in operating hand, power, and mobile equipment • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other employees, and the public

Desired Qualifications: • Class B or Class A CDL preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, pushing/pulling, carrying, climbing, kneeling (bending leg at knee and resting on knee), reaching (extending hands or arms in any direction), handling objects (grasping, turning or otherwise using hands or hand), repetitive hand motion, use of arm muscles over extended periods, sitting, crawling (moving about on hands and knees), crouching (bending at knees), bending at waist, use of leg muscles over extended periods, and overhead work (over shoulder height).

The position frequently requires the employee to lift/carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Items lifted/carried include tools, ladders, paint, buckets, fencing lumber, seed fertilizer, blocks, and logs.

This position requires working outdoors, working indoors, operating machinery or vehicles, working with chemicals, and working near fume/vapors.

This position requires having the physical strength sufficient to perform strenuous labor tasks under varying weather conditions.

Seasonal, temporary, and non-regular employees are not eligible for benefits.
