Description: The Seasonal Head Lifeguard supervises all aspects of an outdoor aquatics facility in the absence of the pool manager, including duties such as employee supervision, facility grounds, patrons, equipment and chemicals, emergency, first aid, and the "Learn to Swim" program. This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations:

Education / higher education: Should have completed High School Junior year; if age 19 or older, must have a High School diploma or GED

Other requirements: At least 17 years of age and at least 5 months as a Lifeguard

Education and/or experience preferences: 18 years of age preferred

Driver's License requirement: Infrequent Driver -- Regular Drivers License Required Endorsements: None

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Required certifications, licenses or registrations: Must be able to complete the following Jeff Ellis & Assoc. Council courses: Lifeguard, Learn to Swim Instructor, CPR and First Aid Must be able to complete the following American Red Cross courses: Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid Must be able to swim at least 1500 yards and, as part of this position, will be tested every two weeks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge: Lifeguarding and lifesaving techniques and procedures

Skills: To identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and swimmers in distress and properly address each situation, preserving life and safety Must have excellent public relations and customer service skills

Abilities: Ability to lift items up to 49 pounds occasionally Ability to swim at least 1500 yards (will be tested every two weeks)

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Will interact with other City staff, taking direction and providing information; will interact with facility patrons and swimmers, providing direction, guidance, instruction and enforcing rules and regulations.

Essential Functions:

Supervises the activities of assigned lower-level Lifeguards and Junior Lifeguards Performs responsible protective service work ensuring the safe use of the swimming facility by patrons Instructs swimming lessons according to a prescribed routine and curriculum; tests program participants for swimming skill levels; passes participants for participation in more advanced classes Assists Pool Manager or Aquatics Manager in the planning of monthly schedules for Lifeguards and oversees and monitors the performance of Lifeguard duties and functions Assists with organization and officiating of swimming meets Performs water rescue as needed and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or first aid treatments to injured or ill patrons Observes actions of swimmers, and maintains discipline in and around pool facilities Monitors and maintains pool filtration equipment Handle and disperse hazardous materials (chlorine, sulfuric acid, etc.) Enforces pool and water safety rules in a tactful and effective manner Assist in teaching swimming, water exercise, and other water related instructional classes to all age groups Retrieves and places pool equipment and teaching materials in appropriate storage after each session; monitors weather conditions to ensure timely retrieval of materials and equipment Maintains swimming pool and surrounding area to ensure the cleanliness and sanitation of recreational facilities Assists with various special projects, community programs and recreational functions Performs light custodial tasks, e.g., empties trash receptacles, cleans and sanitizes bathroom facilities, removes debris.
