SCHOOL NUTRITION SUPERVISOR

Department: School Nutrition

Reports To: School Nutrition Director

FLSA Status: Exempt/Non-Exempt (Based on District Classification)

Work Schedule: 12-Month Employee

POSITION SUMMARY

The School Nutrition Supervisor assists the School Nutrition Director in planning, coordinating,

supervising, and evaluating the operation of the School Nutrition Program throughout the

district. The position provides leadership and support to cafeteria managers and School Nutrition

staff, ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, promotes efficient operations,

maintains high standards for food quality and customer service, and supports the financial

integrity of the School Nutrition Program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Operations and Site Supervision

  • Supervise daily operations of School Nutrition sites throughout the district.
  • Conduct regular site visits to evaluate operational efficiency, food quality, sanitation,safety, customer service, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure consistency in program implementation across all school sites.
  • Monitor implementation of meal service standards, meal patterns, production
  • requirements, and Offer Versus Serve requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, service quality, and program participation.
  • Coordinate and oversee all School Nutrition catering events and special functions
  • throughout the district.
  • Keep the School Nutrition Director informed regarding all aspects of school site operations.
  • Support implementation of new initiatives, menus, procedures, and operational changes.

Staff Supervision and Development

  • Supervise and support cafeteria managers and School Nutrition employees.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, mentoring, and corrective action support to cafeteria managers and staff.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, and evaluation of School Nutrition employees.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and professional development to improve employee performance and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure all staff complete required USDA Professional Standards training hours.
  • Assist with scheduling, staffing coverage, substitute assignments, and resolution of personnel concerns.
  • Promote positive employee relations and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Assist managers with performance improvement plans and corrective actions as necessary.

Regulatory Compliance and Program Accountability

  • Ensure adherence to USDA School Nutrition Program regulations, state requirements,district policies, HACCP guidelines, and Civil Rights requirements.
  • Monitor compliance with meal counting, claiming, and Point-of-Sale procedures.
  • Review and verify meal counts, production records, and required program documentation for accuracy.
  • Support accurate meal claiming and reimbursement processes.
  • Conduct on-site reviews to ensure compliance with USDA, state, local health department,and district requirements.
  • Maintain on-site review documentation in the School Nutrition central office.
  • Assist with preparation for Administrative Reviews, audits, state monitoring visits, and health inspections.
  • Maintain required records and ensure accuracy of reports and documentation.

Menu Implementation, Nutrition, and Wellness

  • Assist with menu planning and menu implementation.
  • Ensure consistency of menu offerings and production practices across all school sites.
  • Test recipes for compliance, yield, quality, and student acceptance.
  • Develop and distribute production sheets and menu instructions to cafeteria managers.
  • Monitor food quality, portion control, meal presentation, and customer service standards.
  • Support implementation of district wellness policies and nutrition guidelines.
  • Coordinate School Wellness Committee meetings and maintain compliance with Local

Wellness Policy requirements.

  • Conduct student taste tests and product evaluations.
  • Develop customer surveys, educational handouts, display boards, and promotional materials related to School Nutrition programs.
  • Promote nutrition education and student engagement activities.

Financial and Operational Management

  • Assist with monitoring food and labor costs at school sites.
  • Assist with budget monitoring and cost-control efforts.
  • Review production records, inventory reports, and operational data for efficiency and accountability.
  • Report operational concerns that may impact financial performance.
  • Assist managers in controlling waste and managing leftovers to reduce food costs.
  • Support inventory control, equipment utilization, and supply management at school sites.
  • Assist with resolving operational issues including production shortages, staffing concerns, equipment failures, and supply needs.

Procurement, Deliveries, and Vendor Relations

  • Coordinate with central office staff regarding procurement activities, food orders, deliveries, and vendor performance.
  • Monitor receiving procedures and inventory practices.
  • Assist with product testing, food tastings, product holds, and product recalls.
  • Support procurement compliance and purchasing procedures in accordance with USDA regulations.
  • Assist with evaluating products and vendors to support efficient program operations.Communication and Customer Service
  • Serve as a liaison between the School Nutrition Department, school administrators, cafeteria managers, staff, parents, vendors, and community partners.
  • Communicate policies, procedures, program updates, and operational expectations to site-level staff.
  • Collaborate with principals, district administrators, vendors, and community stakeholders to support program goals.
  • Address parent, student, and staff concerns related to School Nutrition services.
  • Promote a positive, customer-service-focused culture throughout the district. Training, Planning, and Professional Development
  • Participate in department meetings, training sessions, conferences, and planning
  • activities.
  • Assist with strategic planning and departmental goal-setting initiatives.
  • Stay current with USDA regulations, state guidance, industry trends, and best practices.
  • Assist with implementation of new regulations and operational requirements.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in required in-service training, workshops, and professional development activities.
  • Stay current on USDA regulations, financial management requirements, and industry best practices.

Catering and Special Events Coordination

  • Coordinate and oversee all School Nutrition catering events and special functionsthroughout the district.
  • Serve as the primary contact for catering requests and communicate with district departments, administrators, community organizations, and event coordinators regarding catering services.
  • Assist with planning menus, service requirements, staffing needs, and event logistics for catering functions.
  • Schedule, assign, and supervise School Nutrition staff for catering events to ensure adequate coverage and efficient operations.
  • Manage catering event setup, service, and breakdown to ensure high standards of food quality, presentation, and customer service.
  • Monitor catering labor, food costs, and operational expenses to ensure financial accountability.
  • Ensure all catering activities comply with food safety, sanitation, and district operational standards.
  • Coordinate transportation and delivery of food, equipment, and supplies necessary for catering events.
  • Maintain records of catering events, staffing assignments, revenues, and expenditures.
  • Assist with development and implementation of catering procedures, pricing structures, and service standards.
  • Evaluate catering operations and recommend improvements to enhance customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Promote catering services as a means of supporting School Nutrition program sustainability and customer engagement.

Special Programs and Emergency Operations

  • Assist with Summer Feeding Programs, Afterschool Supper Programs, and other special meal service operations.
  • Support emergency preparedness and crisis response planning for food serviceoperations.
  • Assist with implementation of emergency feeding plans when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the School Nutrition Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree in Food Service Management, Nutrition, Business Administration,Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Bachelor''s degree preferred.
  • School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) credential preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in School Nutrition or food service management.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Valid North Carolina driver''s license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Program regulations.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation principles.
  • Knowledge of quantity food production and menu planning.
  • Ability to supervise, train, motivate, and evaluate employees.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Proficiency in School Nutrition software and Microsoft Office applications.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in both office and school cafeteria environments.
  • Frequent travel between school sites.
  • Exposure to kitchen equipment, heat, noise, and food preparation environments.
  • Occasional evening or weekend meetings and events.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during site visits.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and conduct facility inspections.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and computer systems.

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with Thomasville City Schools Board of

Education policies and procedures.
