JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT MANAGER

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The High School Assistant Manager supports the daily operations of the school nutrition program by stepping in during the manager's absence and executing tasks as directed by the manager. This role is designed to provide hands-on support with managerial responsibilities, fostering the development of leadership and operational skills necessary for future advancement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operational Support:
  • Oversee daily food service operations in the absence of the manager, ensuring compliance with USDA regulations and district policies.
  • Assist in monitoring food preparation, portion control, and service to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Ensure proper food safety and sanitation practices are followed at all times with the support of the manager.
  • Team Leadership:
  • Provide guidance and support to staff, addressing questions or concerns as needed.
  • Promote a positive and collaborative work environment, fostering teamwork and productivity under the leadership of the manager.
  • Assist in training new employees on operational procedures and standards as instructed by the cafeteria manager.
  • Administrative Duties:
  • Assist with maintaining accurate records of inventory, meal counts, and other required documentation.
  • Assist with ordering supplies and managing inventory to prevent shortages or waste.
  • Support the manager in preparing reports(such as production records) and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Professional Development:
  • Actively participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance managerial skills.
  • Shadow the manager to learn effective leadership techniques and decision-making processes.
  • Take initiative to understand all aspects of the school nutrition program, including budgeting, menu planning, and staff management under the leadership of the manager.
  • Customer Service:
  • Address student, staff, and parent inquiries or concerns in a professional and courteous manner as instructed by the cafeteria manager.
  • Ensure a welcoming and inclusive dining environment for all customers.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in food service management or a related field is a plus.
  • Previous experience in school nutrition or food service preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in the absence of the manager.
  • Commitment to learning and growing into a leadership role.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Sanitation Guidelines

  • Be familiar with local, state, and federal sanitation guidelines to ensure compliance within the school nutrition program.
  • Follow all sanitation policies and procedures to maintain a safe and clean environment for food preparation and service.
  • Implement sanitation practices with school nutrition assistants, providing guidance and training as needed to ensure proper adherence.
  • Monitor and enforce sanitation standards during food receiving, storage, preparation, and service to prevent contamination and ensure food safety.
  • Assist in maintaining documentation and records related to sanitation practices and inspections.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced kitchen environment with exposure to heat and cold.
