School Nurse Supervisor

SUBJECT: SCHOOL NURSE SUPERVISOR

REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL NURSES

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:

This position is accountable for the supervision of the school nurses in the implementation of the Worcester Public School (WPS) nurse program under the leadership of the Director of Nursing.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (to be included along with other responsibilities)

1. Responsible for planning weekly and daily schedules for the staff and substitute nurses to ensure proper health coverage of all WPS students.

2. Responsible for supporting all School Nurses with clinical oversight and being available to respond to questions and concerns daily. Assist with the development of nursing care plans and educate on new equipment and procedures as needed.

3. Responsible for assisting and supporting the School Nurses with mandated school health screenings including vision, hearing, BMI, postural assessment, and other health related activities within each school health office. Monitor compliance with such screenings and completion of reports/surveys as requested of the MA Department of Public Health.

4. Responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing with site visits to ensure consistency of set up and management of health offices and safe practices. Addresses all safety issues in a timely manner, providing periodic review of pertinent electronic health record SNAP data for compliance, and provides feedback to staff to support the evaluation process of all School Nurses.

5. Responsible for ensuring all supplies/equipment are available within each school nursing office as required to maintain student health and potential emergencies.

6. Responsible for providing orientation for new nurses and substitute nurses in collaboration with the Director of Nursing. Act as a mentor and resource for new School Nurses.

7. Responsible for offering health-related advice and referrals as indicated to all students, parents, and staff members within the scope of school nurse practice.

8. Responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing with continuous quality improvement initiatives, policy and procedure development and compliance, in-service development and implementation, grant funding projects, and other school health related projects as identified by the Director of Nursing.

9. Responsible for collaborating and consulting with appropriate departments, agencies, and other resources both within and outside the WPS as deemed appropriate to ensure optimal student health and individual academic achievement. Supports the Special Education Department in obtaining nursing care as needed. Coordinates college internship programs within the WPS.

10. Responsible for participating in meetings, conferences, committees, and special events as indicated to represent the WPS nursing program. Responsible for timely and meaningful communication with staff and other stakeholders. Will share new information, resources, knowledge and skills with nursing staff and Director of Nursing as appropriate.

11. Responsible for working collaboratively with the Director of Nursing to establish district school nursing annual goals.

12. Responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing in coordinating/developing School Nurses training based on annual educator needs and district nursing goals. Oversees the provision of in-service training provided to school staff regarding student health related issues. This may include life-threatening allergies, AED use, CPR, concussion reporting and plans of care, endemics, emergency-preparedness, and other required skills and knowledge related to the safe and optimal well-being of all WPS students.

13. Responsible for providing nursing coverage as needed for all school health offices upon the request of the Director of Nursing. This may be necessary to cover sick calls, nursing conference attendance, health related student meetings, providing health education to other nurses, school staff, students, parents, or the community as appropriate.

14. Responsible for the monitoring of scheduled and unscheduled time off, including attendance at staff meetings. Consults with the Director of Nursing as needed when patterns of abuse are noted.

15. Responsible for interim coverage of the Director of Nursing for short-term purposes as deemed appropriate and necessary to allow continuity of nursing leadership.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Registered Nurse with current BORN licensure
2. Master's Degree in Nursing, Nursing Education, or Public Health Nursing
3. Massachusetts DESE licensure as a School Nurse
4. Minimum of five years' experience working as a nurse in a school setting with at least two years' at a supervisory level or an equivalent combination of education and experience
5. Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), AED, and First Aid

Salary: Salary is set according to the WPS Nurse Supervisor Pay Schedule and is based on supervisory experience and highest level of education. The listed range reflects a candidate holding a Master's degree, with potential for higher pay based on advanced education and union contract guidelines.

Work Year: This is a 12-month position, 220 work days subject to an individual contract.

Daily working hours are flexible and depend on supervisor scheduling duties. However, between the two supervisors, full coverage for the district must be provided between 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM .
