Job Goal: The school nurse serves to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and the promotion of health education, advocates for health care for students and staff as well as a healthy summer program environment.
Job Qualifications: • Bachelors degree in nursing (BSN). • Licensed registered nurse in the State of Delaware. • Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and in the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED). • Three years supervised clinical experience preferably with children and youth. • Ability to complete 90 hours of required training approved by the Department of Education consisting of school nursing health education, testing and screening, counseling and guidance, and introduction to exceptional children.
Essential Functions: • Utilizes clinical knowledge and skills to provide health care for students. • Assists in developing, implementing, and evaluating procedures and programs to assess the health and development of students. • Provides for communicable disease information, prevention, and surveillance. • Provides health education, consultation, and assistance to teachers, families, and students. • Provides emergency and first-aid care to students and staff. • Coordinates, conducts, and makes referrals and follow-up on state mandated screenings and health assessments. • Implements a plan of care for students with chronic health conditions and disabilities as well as students needing treatments and medications. • Participates on inter-disciplinary teams to identify students with health needs, interpret health factors impacting students ability to learn, and implements and evaluates the health component of the individual education plan (IEP) and/or 504 accommodation plan. • Maintains clinical records within professional and legal boundaries and school guidelines. • Documents assessments, interventions, and treatments using the school district electronic record system. • Maintains a well-equipped health office with adequate and appropriate supplies. • Collaborates with other school nurses and attends periodic meetings of district nursing staff. • Performs other appropriate assignments not enumerated above as assigned by the building administrator(s).
