Position Description

 

School Nurse

Summary:

The school nurse, under the guidance of Washington State Department of Health and under the supervision of the school administration, develops, implements, manages, and, in some cases, delivers school health services to all students within the school district. The school nurse scope of practice is defined by law and regulation and professional school nursing standards.

Essential Functions:

  • The development of a health services plan that prioritizes services; promotes good mental and physical health practices and behaviors that are culturally appropriate; and, responds to student and cooperative site’s needs.
  • Assesses and provides for the critical needs of the students in each school; i.e., emergency care plans or individual health plans for students with life-threatening medical conditions, medically fragile students, students with health concerns and/or requiring nursing treatments and medication administration. In addition, trains unlicensed staff in the care of those students as appropriate.
  • Delegates to unlicensed school personnel tasks that can by law be delegated and provide training and supervision of non-nurse school staff in providing those services. (i.e. medication and nursing treatments)
  • Provides nursing consultation re: development and/or revision of school health policies and procedures, records and forms, health room procedures, communicable disease control, and student immunization compliance.
  • Assesses the physical and emotional health of students as related to the educational process and within the scope of school nurse practice; initiates referrals for further diagnosis and treatment of identified health needs and provides follow-up; communicates health concerns that may impact learning to appropriate staff with parent and/or student consent.
  • Coordinates and implements health screenings mandated by law, including referral and follow-up.
  • Performs professional nursing tasks as indicated and assigned including emergency services when on site.
  • Serves as a resource for health education to classroom teacher as time allows.
  • Conducts staff CPR trainings as time allows.
  • Performs related duties as assigned. Related duties may not specifically be listed but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s classification of work.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of professional nursing principles, concepts, and legal obligations.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of growth and development.
  • Knowledge of current health issues affecting both rural and urban communities and public schools.
  • Knowledge of Individualized Education Plan specifications.
  • Knowledge of program goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of effective leadership and decision-making techniques.
  • Ability to work and relate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and the public.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with district staff, community agencies, and students.
  • Ability to exhibit professional judgment, responsibility, and dependability.
  • Ability to exemplify good personal health practices and mental health attitudes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing.
  • Ability to interpret students’ health needs to parents and school staff.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and objectivity.
  • Ability to utilize computerized health information software program.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to perform demanding tasks while maintaining a professional environment.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality of student records and pertinent information.
  • Ability to work with computers and operate standard office equipment as necessary to carry out the essential functions of this position.

Qualifications

Current Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certificate as a school nurse, current Washington RN license, current first aid/CPR and CPR/First Aid Instructor certification or willingness to obtain. Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited college or university. School nurse experience in public or private schools preferred. Washington State Patrol and FBI criminal background clearance required. Current Washington State driver’s license and proof of liability insurance required.

Employment Conditions and Benefits

While performing the duties of this job, employee will regularly sit, stand, and walk. Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision. The noise level in this environment is occasionally quiet to moderate. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. Occasionally requires the ability to lift and carry a maximum of 25 pounds.

Hazards: The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. Work is typically performed in an office/classroom environment, and employee is required to deal with a wide range of student achievement and behavior; required to be flexible with tasks and priorities; may need to deal with distraught or difficult individuals; potential exposure to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.
