Position Title: School Health Assistant

Reports To: Registered School Nurse and Building Principal

Classification: Classified/Support Staff

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Purpose

The School Health Assistant assists in providing health-related services to students under the direction and supervision of the corporations Registered School Nurse (RN). The School Health Assistant supports the implementation of individualized healthcare plans, assists students with personal care needs, administers medications and health-related procedures as delegated by the RN and permitted by Indiana law, and helps maintain a safe and healthy school environment.

The School Health Assistant does not independently assess, diagnose, develop nursing care plans, or make nursing judgments. All health services are performed in accordance with Indiana law, State Board of Nursing regulations, corporation policies, physician orders, and healthcare plans developed and supervised by the Registered School Nurse.

Student Health Services

  • Assist in implementing Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Section 504 Plans, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and other health-related plans developed by the Registered School Nurse.
  • Administer medications to students as delegated by the Registered School Nurse and authorized by physician orders and parental consent, in accordance with Indiana law and school corporation policy.
  • Observe students for signs of illness, injury, or changes in health condition and promptly report concerns to the Registered School Nurse.
  • Provide first aid and basic health care services within the scope of training and delegation.
  • Assist with health screenings and other school health initiatives as directed.
  • Maintain accurate medication administration records and health documentation.

Personal Care Assistance

  • Assist students with activities of daily living, including:
  • Toileting and bathroom assistance
  • Diapering and changing of incontinence products
  • Clothing changes
  • Personal hygiene needs
  • Handwashing and grooming assistance
  • Assist students with mobility needs, including transfers, positioning, lifting, and wheelchair assistance, using proper safety techniques and equipment.
  • Maintain student dignity, privacy, and confidentiality during all personal care activities.

Delegated Health Procedures

Under the direction and supervision of the Registered School Nurse and following documented competency training, the School Health Assistant may perform delegated health-related tasks, including:

  • Medication administration as authorized.
  • Emergency medication administration.
  • Monitoring and documentation of student health conditions.
  • Feeding assistance and other health-related procedures permitted by law and delegated by the RN.
  • Other non-complex health procedures determined appropriate for delegation by the Registered School Nurse.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Qualified Medication Aide (QMA), Medical Assistant, EMT, or related healthcare training.
  • Experience working with children or individuals with special health needs.

Legal Compliance Statement

The School Health Assistant serves as unlicensed assistive personnel and performs only those health-related services delegated by and under the supervision of the corporations Registered School Nurse. The School Health Assistant shall not engage in nursing assessment, nursing diagnosis, care planning, or other functions reserved to licensed nurses under Indiana law.

Medication administration and health-related procedures shall be performed only after:

  • Appropriate training has been completed;
  • Competency has been documented by the Registered School Nurse;
  • Written authorization and physician orders are on file as required; and
  • The task is permitted by Indiana statutes, regulations, and school corporation policy.

Compensation

Pay: $14.96 per hour
