Job Summary:
The Communications Coordinator provides leadership for districtwide communications, public relations, and community engagement efforts for Marlborough Public Schools. Working closely with the Superintendent of Schools and district leadership, the coordinator develops and implements strategic communications that promote transparency, strengthen community partnerships, and highlight district achievements, programs, and initiatives. The role is responsible for managing internal and external communications across digital, print, media, and community platforms while supporting the Superintendent in advancing the district's goals and communication priorities.
Statement of Duties:
- Develop, implement, and annually update the districtwide communications and public relations plan in collaboration with the Superintendent.
- Serve as a communications and public relations advisor to the Superintendent and district leadership team.
- Lead proactive community relations efforts that promote district successes, initiatives, and student achievement.
- Support the Superintendent with public messaging, media relations, crisis communications, and community engagement initiatives.
- Create, edit, and manage written content, photography, and video for district publications, websites, social media, marketing, and archival purposes in compliance with FERPA guidelines.
- Manage and maintain district communication platforms, including the website, social media accounts, district app, and other digital communication tools.
- Coordinate media outreach and cultivate positive relationships with local news outlets, community organizations, PTOs, booster groups, and other stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities to increase public awareness and recognition of district programs, events, and accomplishments.
- Plan, promote, and attend district events to gather and share content across communication channels.
- Collaborate with principals and school leaders to develop consistent messaging and content for school and district communication platforms.
- Ensure communications are accessible and inclusive through translation services and technology tools supporting individuals with disabilities.
- Prepare and distribute districtwide communications through electronic, print, web-based, and social media platforms.
- Assist with emergency and crisis communications in coordination with district leadership using appropriate communication systems and platforms.
- Collaborate with transportation and other departments to communicate time-sensitive operational updates to families, students, and staff.
- Analyze and share data regarding the effectiveness of district communication efforts and recommend improvements.
- Promote effective use of district communication tools among staff to strengthen school-family-community engagement.
- Collaborate with external vendors and organizations to support district communications and public relations initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher preferred with significant experience in working with community/public engagement or marketing, preferably in PreK-12 public education.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in photography and videography required.
- Previous demonstrated professional experience developing and implementing a communications plan required.
- Intermediate to advanced experience with social media platforms required.
- Three years' professional experience in public relations and/or marketing required.
- At least 1-year successful experience working with school-based community relations and a demonstrated ability to develop and implement positive media content for social media and websites.
- Must be able to work in-person up to an 8-hour workday supporting early morning school communications and afternoon communications as well as able to attend specific evening or weekend events as planned in advance and accessible for unplanned crisis/emergency communication support for the district on occasion.
- Bilingual (Spanish or Portuguese) preferred.
- Must be organized, able to work independently as well as part of a team and able to design efficient systems for communication.
- Must be able to write and produce content quickly and accurately.
