Examples of Duties

Job Purpose

Under general supervision, assists in administering County safety programs, inspects County work conditions and equipment, and observes work activities of County employees for conformance with safety regulations and policies and occupational health standards.

Essential Job Duties

  • Travels to inspect County work conditions, environment, and equipment, and to observe and analyze work activities of County employees, for conformance with safety regulations and policies and occupational health standards.
  • Issues written work orders directing the prompt correction of observed safety or health hazards and unsafe practices.
  • Recommends the time within which a county agency must comply with such written orders.
  • Makes re-inspections, as necessary, to ensure compliance with written orders.
  • Advises County agencies and employees concerning the County safety program, various State and Federal laws regarding safety, chemical information lists, and safety data sheets.
  • Organizes and delivers training on a wide variety of safety and health topics including CPR/First Aid, traffic control and defensive driving.
  • Disseminates information on environmental hazards.
  • Coordinates the employee safety shoe program.
  • Conducts investigations of accidents, including all County vehicular accidents, to determine their causes, devise preventive measures, and discover trends.
  • Recommends more efficient, cost-effective measures to reduce or eliminate such accidents.
  • Conducts special investigations of a variety of suspected safety or occupational health violations and prepare reports thereon
  • Administers random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up employee substance testing in accordance with the Countys drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Prepares and amends existing safety and occupational health policies and programs.
  • Reviews policies and procedures developed by County agencies for compliance with safety and occupational health practices.
  • Coordinates activities with other State and local officials.

  • Serves as the departments representative on intra-county, community, or other committees.
  • Performs general office support functions.

Qualifications

Associates in Arts degree, preferably in occupational safety, environmental health, or a closely related field

Plus

Two years experience in which occupational safety and/or environmental health inspection and maintenance was the primary function of the position.

(Additional qualifying experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required education.)

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland drivers license is required at the time of appointment.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Some positions may be required to satisfactorily complete County sponsored CPR and First Aid training. These positions must maintain certification throughout employment.

Employees in this classification are subject to call to duty in emergencies, and may be required to work overtime with little or no notice.

Salary

Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance

General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.

Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
