Who We Are:

As the Facility Department team at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), we are responsible for managing the operation and maintenance of SwRI facilities. SwRI is a nonprofit R&D organization headquartered in San Antonio, TX, with over 3,000 employees providing innovative solutions to industry and government clients worldwide. In this role, you will assist Facility Operations and Capital Improvements with their Health, Safety, and Environmental needs.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety programs to ensure compliance with the OSHA, EPA, TCEQ regulations, and institute requirements.
  • Evaluate working conditions, operational practices, and equipment to identity and correct health, safety and environmental hazards or potential violations.
  • Investigate and analyze data to determine the severity and root cause of violations, injuries, or damages.
  • Provide support and guidance to project managers, technicians, and administrative staff on safety and risk management programs.
  • Develop and deliver training sessions, prepare safety reports for management, and communicate clear and concise safety information to employees to increase their awareness and knowledge.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and assess working areas, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and to mitigate hazards.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses, analyzing root causes and trends.
  • Prepare detailed reports for management and regulatory authorities.
  • Respond to employee concerns about HSE, taking action to rectify identified hazards or deficiencies.
  • Develop, implement, and update safety policies, procedures, and training programs to promote a culture of safety awareness and compliance among employees, in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Organize and lead safety meetings, training, and drills to enhance emergency response preparedness.
  • Conduct risk management and safety education programs, delivering training to boost employee knowledge and awareness of best practices.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and presentations related to health and safety management programs and maintain documentation.
  • Stay current with industry-specific regulations and best practices, providing expertise and guidance on compliance matters to continuously improve safety.

Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelors or a Masters degree in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), Health, Safety Engineering, and Environment (HSE) or directly related degree field.
  • Those with a Bachelors degree require 2 years relevant experience and those with a Masters degree require at least 1 year relevant experience.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Professional (GSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) preferred or ability to obtain certification within 1 year.
  • Shift work required.
  • 2+ years: Strong understanding of safety and environmental principles, regulations, and best practices. Familiar with the use of safety equipment and procedures. Organize and maintain safety documentation.
  • 2+ years: Identity and assess hazards, and develop and implement solutions to mitigate those hazards. Analyze data and identify trends to identity potential problems before they occur.
  • 2+ years: Communicate effectively with employees, managers, and other stakeholders. Explain safety concepts in a clear and concise way, and build relationships and trust with others.
  • 2+ years: Train employees on safety procedures. They must also be able to motivate and inspire employees to follow safety rules. Must be able to manage their time effectively and prioritize their tasks.
  • A valid/clear drivers license is required.
