Job Title: RTT Engineering Technician (Construction Materials Testing Level I/II)

Job Description

This role focuses on construction materials testing and quality assurance in the field, with an emphasis on roadway and infrastructure projects. The RTT Engineering Technician performs field testing of soil, concrete, masonry, asphalt, and geosynthetics, conducts inspections, monitors contractor activities, and completes detailed daily reports. The position is primarily on-site and outdoors, often requiring long hours, flexible shifts, and occasional weekend work. Travel and extended stays out of town may be required, and a strong willingness to travel is essential. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to start or grow a career in construction materials testing with a company that invests heavily in training, certifications, and career advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform construction quality assurance field testing of soil, concrete, masonry, asphalt, and geosynthetics in accordance with project specifications and applicable standards.
  • Assist engineers and other professionals by conducting a variety of tests, project-specific observations, and site assessments on active construction sites.
  • Operate field testing equipment and instruments, including nuclear density gauges and related tools, to perform soil compaction and density testing, concrete testing, and other materials tests.
  • Work from drawings, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and detailed verbal and written instructions to ensure testing and inspections align with project requirements.
  • Observe site activities, monitor contractor operations, and document compliance with plans, specifications, and codes.
  • Collect soil, concrete, and other material samples, perform field and laboratory tests, and accurately record and report test data.
  • Monitor earthwork operations, including backfill and soils work, and verify that compaction and density requirements are met.
  • Oversee and support concrete placement activities, including monitoring concrete pours, sampling concrete, and performing required tests as dictated by codes and project specifications.
  • Communicate daily with contractors and project stakeholders to verify plans on-site, understand job specifications, and clarify testing and inspection requirements.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and timely daily field reports that document activities, observations, test results, and any issues encountered.
  • Adapt to varying work schedules, including early morning, daytime, nighttime, and overnight shifts, depending on pour schedules and project needs.
  • Travel to job sites in the Atlanta area and potentially to out-of-town or Caribbean/Virgin Islands projects, including extended stays as required.
  • Work independently or as part of a crew, depending on project requirements, and follow direction from tenured personnel on-site.
  • Participate in training and cross-training activities, including learning proof rolls, soil "cooking" (drying) procedures, and other specialized testing methods.
  • Maintain testing equipment and company vehicles in a clean, safe, and operational condition, following all safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate dependability and flexibility by responding to schedule changes, weather-related adjustments, and concrete pour timing.
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement by pursuing additional certifications and applying new skills in the field.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I certification (required).
  • At least 2+ years of experience as a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Roadway Testing Technician with RTT GDOT certification, where applicable.
  • Strong hands-on experience with concrete testing, including sampling, slump, air content, temperature, and cylinder preparation.
  • Experience with soil testing, including soil compaction and soil density testing, is highly preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Ability to follow specific verbal and written instructions accurately in the field.
  • Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours, including nights, early mornings, and weekends as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, including potential extended stays out of town or on remote projects.
  • Strong attention to detail for accurate sampling, testing, and documentation.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with contractors, clients, and internal teams.
  • Dependability and flexibility in responding to changing schedules and project demands.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively in a crew environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • ACI certification (beyond the required Level I) is a strong asset.
  • Roadway Testing Technician (RTT) certification, especially with GDOT, is highly valued.
  • NICET certification in construction materials testing is a plus.
  • GSWCC certification is a plus.
  • ICC certifications related to building or materials inspection are a plus.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is a plus.
  • Nuclear Gauge Certification and experience using a nuclear density gauge are a plus.
  • Prior experience in construction materials testing laboratories is beneficial.
  • Experience with geosynthetics testing or inspection is an advantage.
  • Strong interest in pursuing additional certifications and professional development.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work on active construction sites.
  • Comfort working on both day and night shifts, including variable and rotating schedules.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and outdoors, supporting construction projects throughout the Atlanta area and occasionally in other locations, including Caribbean and Virgin Islands projects. Technicians typically work 5-6 days per week, often 8-12-hour days, with a typical weekly workload of approximately 45-55 hours, though this is not guaranteed. Schedules can vary widely: shifts may run from early morning (e.g., 3:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. or midnight-10:00 a.m.) to standard daytime hours (e.g., 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.), depending on concrete pour schedules, weather, and project needs. Nighttime concrete pours are especially common during summer months. Flexibility and dependability are critical, as there is "no typical night" and work may shift between day and night over the course of a week. The work involves frequent travel between job sites in the Atlanta region, with an emphasis on staffing near Forest Park and other project locations. Technicians may ride job sites, check in with contractors, verify plans on-site, and then monitor concrete placement and sampling as required by codes. The environment includes monitoring earthwork, backfill, soils work, and random concrete pours. The role involves using field testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges, soil sampling tools, and devices for concrete testing, as well as performing tasks like proof rolls and soil moisture "cooking" (drying) to determine density. A tenured person on-site typically oversees overall activities and delegates tasks, while technicians may work solo or as part of a crew depending on job requirements. The organization offers a smaller-firm feel with strong availability and dependability, and it emphasizes career growth and training. Technicians may have access to a company truck and fuel card, with the ability to drive the truck between home and job site once the privilege is earned and maintained. The company invests in employees by paying for the first round of certifications, providing study support, encouraging cross-training with tenured technicians, and offering upward mobility beyond entry-level concrete work. Extended stays out of town, including in Caribbean locations, may be part of the role, with travel and housing arrangements facilitated for technicians who show initiative and a desire to work on those projects.
