About the Job:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a passionate and skilled Road Design Engineer to join our team in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In this role, you'll take on meaningful work that directly impacts the safety, efficiency, and quality of our state's roadways.
Job Summary:
As a Road Design Engineer, youll be responsible for developing, refining, and reviewing highway construction plans that are critical to improving Wyoming's transportation system. Working under limited supervision, you'll help bring complex infrastructure projects to life-from initial concept through to contract bidding-ensuring every design meets the highest standards of safety and functionality.
Essential Functions:
- Develops, refines, and reviews horizontal and vertical alignments
- Establishes the dimensions and geometry of roadway cross-sectional elements
- Designs and details other roadway features such as guardrail installations, culverts, storm sewer, drainage structures, utility, and right-of-way impacts
- Calculates pay quantities for the materials used to construct roadways and prepares spreadsheets summarizing these quantities
- Attends periodic workshops to increase skills and knowledge and train others in new methods and procedures
- Issues intermediate plan sets and attends inspections
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of calculus, geometry, algebra, and trigonometry
- Knowledge of highway engineering concepts and principles
- Knowledge of the WYDOT project/plan development procedures and project flow charts
- Skill in technical writing
- Skill in communication and time management
- Skill in the use of computer applications for office automation
- Ability to write reports and specifications
- Ability to produce engineering plans and develop cost estimates in a timely manner
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelors Degree (in Engineering)
- Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering)
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Some agencies may require a certificate of registration from the Board of Engineering
Notes:
- FLSA: Non-Exempt
- E-Verify: WYDOT uses E-Verify, an Internet-based system, to confirm the eligibility of all newly hired employees to work in the United States.

- Acceptance of a permanent full-time non-exempt/exempt position posted for public recruitment

- One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay
- Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date
- Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period
- If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back
