Director of Critical Care (ICU, Forensics & Dialysis)

Full-Time | Nashville General Hospital
Nashville General Hospital (NGH) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Critical Care to provide strategic and operational leadership for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Forensic Services, and Dialysis Program. This leader will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability, and driving operational and financial performance across assigned service lines. The Director of Critical Care serves as a key member of the nursing leadership team and collaborates closely with physicians, hospital executives, interdisciplinary teams, and community partners to advance organizational goals, improve patient outcomes, and enhance the overall patient and employee experience.

Key Leadership Responsibilities

  • Champion and promote the organization's mission, vision, and values throughout all areas of responsibility.
  • Provide strategic direction and operational oversight to ensure exceptional clinical quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and service excellence.
  • Develop and implement initiatives that improve patient outcomes, optimize resource utilization, increase operational efficiency, and support financial performance.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop managers and staff while promoting employee engagement, professional growth, and retention.
  • Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, supportive environment that promotes high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for forensic patient operations, ensuring staff understanding and compliance with all applicable security protocols and care requirements.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day operations for ICU, Forensic Services, and Dialysis programs, ensuring efficient patient flow and optimal staffing levels.
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical programs and services.
  • Manage departmental budgets, capital planning, productivity, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee development, and retention strategies.
  • Ensure staff maintain required competencies and receive ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations.
  • Monitor departmental performance metrics and implement action plans to achieve quality, safety, operational, and financial goals.
  • Maintain oversight of equipment, supplies, and contracted services, including dialysis operations and vendor performance.
  • Provide clinical support and leadership during operational challenges as needed.

Quality & Performance Improvement

  • Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on patient safety, clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and cost management.
  • Establish and maintain evidence-based service standards and best practices.
  • Analyze operational and clinical performance data to identify opportunities for improvement and drive measurable results.
  • Promote standardization of processes and workflows to enhance efficiency, consistency, and continuity of care.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and patient safety standards.
  • Monitor contracted dialysis services to ensure achievement of established performance metrics and quality expectations.

Education
  • BSN - Required
  • MSN - Preferred if not must be completed within the first 2 years of employment

Certifications and Licensure

  • RN or higher Licensure for the State of TN -
  • BLS - Required
  • ALS - Required

Experience Requirements

  • Healthcare/Medical - Manager Level - 3 + years Preferred
  • Acute Care/ICU Management - 3+ years Required
