About the Department of Revenue:

The Indiana Department of Revenue team is comprised of over 700 staff that are located in 13 locations across the state of Indiana. We work collaboratively with the Indiana Governors office, the General Assembly, state agencies, individuals, business owners, corporations, tax practitioners, and a variety of tax program participants to administer Indianas tax laws. DOR administers over 65 tax types and annually processes nearly $21 billion of tax revenue. Our mission is to serve Indiana by administering tax laws in a fair, secure, and efficient manner.

Role Overview:

The Revenue Tax Specialist examines, reviews, assesses, and collects various State taxes. You will apply laws, rules, and regulations to difficult and complex tax compliance determinations. You will determine the eligibility for tax benefit programs, credits, and deductions, reviewing and evaluating the accuracy of assessments and adjustments made by other staff.

This is postion will report to the Lafayette District Office.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,320.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Provide technical and procedural assistance to taxpayers, taxpayer representatives, other divisions within agency, other state agencies.
  • Review accounts and properly apply payments to taxpayer accounts as needed.
  • Conduct extensive research to resolve complex issues related to payments and/or returns for taxpayers, including research in DOR's software and database applications for unpaid/unfiled tax liabilities.
  • Review and close files paid in full, dismissed, or discharged.
  • Create billings/liabilities in DOR's software and database applications according to court orders. abates penalties and interest accordingly.
  • Assist with evidence collection process in Investigations cases, including preparation of documents to establish continuity of custody for items of evidence to ensure that judicial requirements are met.
  • Complete disclosure requests for confidential taxpayer information by performing a thorough review of the request and analyzing the Department's records.

Additional duties based on the role:

  • Audit Desk & TRIU: Work as part of the Department's Taxpayer Risk Investigations Unit to deter, detect and prevent tax fraud. Perform variety of duties related to the detection and prevention of identity theft/tax fraud. Research and analyze potentially fraudulent tax returns from a variety of sources concerning a variety of tax types.
  • Bankruptcy: Provide technical assistance, knowledge, and research of information to ensure compliance with the Federal Bankruptcy Code and state laws and procedures, maximizing the State's portion of distributions to mitigate collection losses, efficient and effective protects the interest of the Department within the bankruptcy proceedings, and addresses taxpayer's bankruptcy related issues.
  • Audit Support: Assist auditors in preparation of audit workpapers, research, and computer system support to ensure customer accounts are correct and accurate.
  • Customer Service
  • Taxpayer Advocate: Specialist in the Advocacy Office providing research and critical responses to disclosure requests and advocate cases that include hardship, offer in compromise, and highly technical and sensitive tax issues for all tax types. Perform a variety of auditing, control, and public assistance duties relative to the preparation, payment and collection of various state taxes.
  • Tax Practitioner Team: Specialist in Customer Service assisting on highly sensitive situations to our Tax Practitioner customers on client tax issues, researching and resolving complex tax issues that can include multiple tax types, accounts and responsible office/share holder on matters that may include any tax type administered by DOR.
  • Team Lead: In assigned area, completing duties assigned that include performing extensive research and providing critical responses to the CSRs interacting with customers, de-escalating customer situations, providing training, feedback and one-on-one coaching to their team.
  • District Office Assistant Supervisor: A Team Lead to the team assigned at the District Office they report to. Includes performing extensive research and providing critical responses to the CSRs interacting with customers, de-escalating customer situations, providing training, feedback and one-on-one coaching to a team. This may also include following established procedures to open and close the walk-in center, reconciling payment batches, and taking funds to a local banking institution for deposit.

What Youll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal tax laws, rules and regulations applying to each of the several types of taxes.
  • Specialized knowledge of accounting and auditing techniques used by businesses and industries.
  • No degree is required. However, 6 years of experience in accounting, tax collection, finance, or customer service or a similar role may be considered.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
