NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the National Park Service (NPS). These experienced professionals provide administrative expertise, facilities management, natural and cultural resource planning, and a broad array of other professional skills that support the National Park Service through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).

Qualifications:

AA Degree with minimum additional experience of 2 year(s) in ecological restoration, vegetation management, or nursery

  • Required: valid driver?s license; willingness to work/hike in uneven terrain and carry day pack up to 10 lb; and, capacity to follow field/office protocols; demonstrated experience with vegetation management and/or plant propagation.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams, MS Outlook, MS SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat
Duties:

This individual will accomplish tasks to keep the various vegetation programs functioning including: replanting sequoia groves, training younger staff, working with the herbarium, tending the plant nursery, planning for meadow restoration, collecting native seed, and maintaining the native vegetation around the Ash Mountain Visitor Center.

  • Ecological Knowledge: apply knowledge of Sierra Nevada vegetation and ecosystems toward ecological restoration of degraded plant communities. Apply knowledge and experience with ecological restoration techniques including seed collection, processing and propagating native plant material, maintaining visitor center garden, surveying conifers for cone collection, planting seedlings at restoration sites. May require some camping.   85%

Other:
  • Overnight travel: ?camping up to 3 nights per week for 1-2 months for field work. ?
  • Health and Safety Considerations: At the direction of the NPS primary supervisor, including but not limited to environmental hazard safety training via attendance at Safety Standdown, tailgate safety sessions, and review of applicable Job Hazard Guidelines and Job Hazard Analysis documents.
  • Required Safety Gear: Hardhat (near hazard trees), safety vest (roadsides), gloves (nursery and planting), dust mask (near rodent droppings).
  • Physical requirements: Position will require both office time working at a computer and outdoor activities at up to 7000 feet elevation, including carrying day packs and equipment occasionally up to 30-40 pounds over uneven terrain, with hazards including possible exposure to stinging insects and wildfire smoke.
