Slalom Responsible AI Practice
Position Overview
Slalom's Responsible AI practice is seeking a Consultant / Senior Consultant in AI Risk Management to lead the development and execution of robust AI risk management programs and solutions for our clients' AI initiatives. This position sits at the nexus of advanced technology, risk management, and ethics, and is pivotal in realizing AI systems that are both innovative and trustworthy in high-stakes, real-world contexts. The role calls for a practitioner who combines deep technical understanding of AI systems and a rigorous understanding of risk management practices, including emerging AI regulations and frameworks. We are looking for an individual who thrives in a transdisciplinary environment, a person who can engage with AI engineers through to business executives to tackle AI risk identification, assessment, and management, including control engineering, with a view to unlocking business objectives.
In this role, you will collaboratively craft AI risk management frameworks and risk controls that align with our clients' organizational objectives and values. You will work closely with diverse stakeholders, from ML engineers and software architects to legal, compliance, and business executives, to achieve business-enabling, effective AI risk management across the AI lifecycle. You will leverage sociotechnical approaches that span technical innovation through to human-centered design and organizational change management to empower clients to confidently scale their AI transformations is alignment with risk appetite and ethical principles.
Key Responsibilities
AI Governance Frameworks & Policy Development:
- Design and implement comprehensive programs and policies for AI support effective holistic risk management.
- Design organizational frameworks aligned with industry standards (e.g., NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001) and adapt them to meet specific client's business strategies and regulatory landscape.
Risk Assessment & Control Architecture:
- Lead end-to-end AI risk assessments for high-impact AI systems.
- Identify potential failure modes, vulnerabilities, and ethical risks across the AI lifecycle.
- Develop risk tiering methodologies and AI risk and model inventories to prioritize oversight for high-risk use cases.
- Design technical controls, such as automated monitoring, alerting, and logging
Testing & Validation of AI Models:
- Establish rigorous testing protocols to validate AI systems, including generative AI and agentic AI systems)
- Design and oversee stress-testing, adversarial red-teaming, bias and fairness assessments, and model explain ability evaluations in collaboration with Slalom Subject Matter Experts.
Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Coordinate across client functions to achieve outcome-focused, scalable AI risks management (AI/ML engineering, data science, IT, cybersecurity, compliance, legal, and business operations)
- Guide the development of AI oversight committees, risk review boards, and cross-functional workflows that align with clients' overall enterprise risk management and innovation frameworks
Thought Leadership
- Help shape Slalom's market presence by translating field insights into enhancements of our offerings and marketing campaigns
Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Degree in relevant field(e.g., computer science, policy, social sciences, engineering, or physical sciences) required and advanced degree preferred. 5+ years of combined experience in AI/ML development and risk management or governance roles with significant exposure to AI policy initiatives. Experience working with or within highly regulated industries (e.g., financial services, healthcare, life sciences, public sector) is strongly preferred.
- AI/ML Technical Expertise: Solid background in machine learning and AI systems with deep understanding and experience with AI model development and deployment processes. Capable of engaging with technical teams on AI architecture and system design considerations, and identifying potential risk points in the AI lifecycle. Practical experience with data science is required.
- AI Governance & Policy Development: Proven ability to design and implement AI governance frameworks and organizational policies that ensure safe, ethical, and compliant AI use across the enterprise. Experience establishing AI governance programs and risk management processes aligned to business strategy is essential.
- AI Risk Management Frameworks & Regulations: Deep knowledge of leading AI risk management standards and emerging regulations, such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001, EU AI Act, and related guidelines. A track record of operationalizing these frameworks in practice.
- Technical Control Engineering & Automation: Strong expertise in designing and deploying risk controls at the system and application level (e.g. implementing control engineering solutions for AI/ML systems).
- AI System Monitoring & Observability: Hands-on experience with AI solutions observability and monitoring.
- Testing & Validation of AI Models: Demonstrated skill in testing and evaluation of AI/ML models, including developing testing protocols to measure model behavior, identify failure modes, and validate performance against risk criteria, Familiarity with tools and processes for AI system assessment and validation (e.g. stress-testing, red-teaming, bias & fairness assessment) is expected.
- Risk Assessment & Tiering: Ability to conduct comprehensive AI risk assessments, maintain AI inventories, and apply risk tiering & impact assessment methodologies. Capable of prioritizing risks and controls based on use case risk profiles and business impact, ensuring that higher-risk AI systems receive appropriate governance and oversight.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders from data scientists and engineers to risk, compliance, and executives. Proven ability to build trust and facilitate cross-functional discussions on AI risk.
- Client Delivery & Leadership: Experience leading complex projects, preferably in technology or risk management domains. Skills in project management, team leadership, and delivering high-quality results on time and within scope for client programs are crucial.
- Training & Change Management: Ability to develop and deliver training programs and change initiatives to build AI risk management capabilities within client organizations. This includes strong facilitation skills and a talent for driving cultural change around emerging technology governance.
What You'll Do
- Client Engagement & Delivery: Lead complex workstreams focused on Responsible AI and AI risk management. From initial assessments of a client's current AI governance maturity to the design and implementation of tailored risk controls, you will guide clients through the process of operationalizing AI risk management. You will ensure deliverables (e.g., risk assessment reports, governance frameworks, etc.) meet high standards of quality, clarity, and relevance.
- Governance Strategy & Framework Implementation: Work closely with client stakeholders to co-create AI risk management strategies that align with their business goals and regulatory landscapes. Develop and roll out enterprise-wide, scalable AI risk management programs and operating models with clearly defined roles, responsibilities, and processes.
- Risk Control Engineering & Monitoring: Design and implement technical controls and system architectures to mitigate AI-related risks. Collaborate with Slalom and client engineering teams to embed security, privacy, and compliance controls into AI platforms and data pipelines.
- Testing & Validation of AI Systems: Oversee and contribute to rigorous testing of AI systems, especially for high-risk AI applications. Guide client teams in implementing these testing protocols and interpreting the results to support concrete improvements in model design and deployments.
- Training, Upskilling & Change Management: Play a key role in building our clients' internal capabilities for ongoing AI risk management. Design and deliver training workshops and educational materials to upskill client teams. Lead change management initiatives to help embed a culture of accountability AI use in alignment with new policies and processes such that AI risk management enhancements are sustainable.
- Thought Leadership & Practice Development: Contribute to the growth of Slalom's Responsible AI practice by staying at the forefront of industry trends. Conduct research and synthesize insights on emerging topics to inform both client work and Slalom's service offerings. Mentor and support junior consultants in developing their expertise. Collaborate with Slalom's cross-functional teams (data science, engineering, strategy) to continue evolving our AI Risk Management frameworks and tools.

- Consultant - $119,500 - $146,000
- Sr. Consultant - $149,500 - $183,000
Boston, New York City, Washington D.C.
- Consultant - $130,500 - $159,000
- Sr. Consultant - $163,000 - $199,500
In addition, individuals may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. Actual compensation will depend upon an individual's skills, experience, qualifications, location, and other relevant factors. The salary pay range is subject to change and may be modified at any time.
