Brief Position Overview

The Residence Hall Director is a full-time, 12-month, live-in professional staff member who serves as a key member of the Housing & Residence Life leadership team. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Housing and Event Support, the Residence Hall Director is responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging residential community that supports student success, retention, and personal development.

The Residence Hall Director provides leadership for the daily operation and management of an assigned residence hall. Housing and residence life servs approximately 400 residents who choose to live on campus each semester. Responsibilities include community development, student engagement, crisis response, behavioral intervention, program implementation, policy enforcement, and collaboration with campus partners to enhance the residential experience.

The Residence Hall Director directly supervises approximately 20 student staff members, including Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, and Summer Operations staff, providing training, mentoring, performance management, and ongoing professional development. As a member of the Housing & Residence Life leadership team, the Residence Hall Director participates in an on-call rotation, responds to student emergencies and critical incidents, and contributes to departmental initiatives that advance the mission and goals of Housing & Residence Life and Montana State University Billings.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional or graduate-level experience in Housing & Residence Life, Student Affairs, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring, and developing student employees or paraprofessional staff.
  • Experience in student engagement, community development, educational programming, and student leadership development.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage conflict, respond to crisis situations, and exercise sound judgment in complex and time-sensitive situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, and public presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities with the capacity to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, colleagues, campus partners, and community members.
  • Must be able to live in a university-provided apartment within the assigned residence hall as a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Education, Leadership, or a closely related field.
  • Experience serving as a student conduct hearing officer or adjudicating student conduct cases.
  • Experience advising student organizations or leadership groups.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, identity development, and best practices in residence life.
  • Experience developing Living Learning Communities, themed housing, or residential curriculum initiatives.
  • Experience coordinating summer housing, conferences, camps, or conference services.
  • Familiarity with student conduct software, housing management systems, and assessment practices.

    This position requires the ability to exercise independent judgment and respond effectively to emergencies, student concerns, and critical incidents. The Residence Hall Director serves as a highly visible representative of Housing & Residence Life and is expected to maintain a consistent presence within the residential community while fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging living environment.

    Working hours regularly include evenings and weekends and vary based on the needs of the residential community. The position includes a university-provided apartment within the assigned residence hall and a university meal (U-Card) allocation during the academic year.
    Professional development is encouraged through participation in regional and national conferences, committee involvement, professional associations, and community engagement opportunities, subject to departmental funding and operational needs.
