Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist II within the Medical Immunology Department at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.

The primary role of the Research Teaching Specialist II (RTS II), under direction of the Principal Investigator, Christian Hinrichs, is to design and conduct highly specialized, technical research in tumor immunology with a focus on the discovery and development of T cell therapy for cancer, including tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and geneengineered T cells. Active areas of research include T cell receptor discovery, membrane-tethered cytokine technologies, tumor resistance mutations, target antigen discovery, and preclinical development of new TCR-based treatments. There will be opportunities to work in an interdisciplinary team both in clinical and laboratory research settings on a variety of high impact, cutting edge projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Conducts multidisciplinary research in the area of tumor immunology and cancer immunotherapy with a focus on the discovery and development of T cell therapy for cancer, including cell culture, immunologic assays, molecular assays, gene engineering, and animal experiments.
  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, investigates, reviews, modifies, develops, and tests new analytical procedures and methodologies.
  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, assists with the design of research studies, according to study protocols.
  • Functions as a scientific consultant in areas pertaining to specific expertise and trains personnel in the laboratory.
  • Interprets raw analytical data and presents and submits conclusions to the Principal Investigator for approval.
  • Prepares or participates in the preparation of sound, accurate, written and oral reports relating to research, grant, and other activities containing findings, conclusions, or recommendations.
  • Keeps detailed laboratory notebooks and stores digital research data in designated locations.
  • Follows laboratory rules and research protocols.
  • Collaborates with other laboratory members to maintain laboratory equipment, manage shared supplies and inventories, review and update laboratory protocols, and dispose of hazardous waste properly.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in a biomedical or related science, plus two (2) years of related research experience, or a Bachelor's Degree in a biomedical or related science, plus three (3) years of related research experience.

Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required. Effective oral and written communication skills required.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with detailed knowledge of T cell biology, tumor immunology, antigen presentation, T cell receptors, tumor antigens, immunotherapy and laboratory animals preferred.

Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Standing, sitting, walking, talking, and hearing.
  • No special vision requirements.
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Laboratory environment. Moderate noise.
  • Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs, and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory.
