The Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies (formerly Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies) is undergoing dynamic and transformative growth. The Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies is one of the nation's leading tobacco focused research centers and its faculty have received over $50 million in extramural funding over the past two decades. The Institute's efforts are focused on their mission of reducing and ultimately eliminating, tobacco-related morbidity and mortality.

Five Centers or Programs currently operate at the Institute including a Tobacco Center for Regulatory Science, the Center of Excellence for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco, the Tobacco Dependence Program, a Tobacco Industry Marketing Program, and a Tobacco Control Law & Policy Resource Center.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Scientist II for the Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies, located in New Brunswick, NJ. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator of the Center for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco (CRST), this position will assist in the design and conduct of specialized tobacco research, using judgment to adapt methods and techniques. The Research Scientist II is responsible for managing research studies, including design, analysis, and reporting. This position will provide high-level administrative and research support, which meets high-quality standards, taking a leadership role in program oversight, planning, and development, and coordinating tasks among research personnel and assuring progress toward deliverables. The position may oversee the work of student research assistants

Duties include:

  • Serves as Project lead of the Tobacco Industry Marketing program under the direction of the Faculty Lead for the Tobacco Industry Marketing (TIM) program, including dissemination products (papers, presentations and public alerts)
  • Oversees archive management and image processing for various TIM program dissemination channels.
  • Provides training and supervision of research assistants assigned to TIM program projects to facilitate quality control of data coding as well as dissemination products
  • Conducts routine surveillance of advertising materials across various platforms (social media, MediaRadar, Mintel).
  • Serves as Project Lead or senior research staff on tobacco and nicotine-related research studies, supporting the CRST PI with the design, development, and implementation of research protocols, followed by appropriate reports, recommendations and conclusions

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master's Degree in related science, plus three (3) years of demonstrated experience in tobacco control research required.
  • A Doctorate degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of experience indicated above.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A publication track record in tobacco control is strongly preferred.
