The Kasper Lab is hiring a Research Assistant II to join us in the Department of Molecular and Systems Biology in the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in beautiful Hanover, NH. We investigate the developmental mechanisms governing the vascular and hematopoietic systems in health and disease. We use a combination of live imaging, genetic and biochemical approaches, and high-throughput 'omic' technologies in the zebrafish to dissect how epigenetic to posttranslational gene regulatory mechanisms control cell differentiation. The ideal candidate will be familiar with genetics and have experience with animal models and molecular and cell biology techniques, including cloning and PCR, transcriptomics, image analysis, and/or microscopy. We seek a curious and creative team member, who is highly motivated to carry out independent research projects, zebrafish husbandry, and technical training for lab members.

Description Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors plus 2-3 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Highly competent in molecular laboratory methods, procedures and techniques as well as the equipment and instruments, e.g. PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, immunohistochemical methods, and microscopy.
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage laboratory inventory and records.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Skilled hands, and good judgment.
  • Open and transparent communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Editorial skills for preparation of reports.
  • Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.

Description

Research/Experiments

  • Independently designs, implements, analyzes, and interprets experiments under the general guidance of the principal investigator or other investigators in the laboratory.
  • Works on an independent research project and/or assists lab members with experiments, depending on need and expertise.
  • Conducts experiments using established methods and procedures. As necessary, develops and/or implements new or modified research methods, procedures, and techniques to meet the unique requirements of assigned research problems.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental design; methods, procedures, and techniques; or equipment and facilities.
  • Monitors work in progress to ensure accomplishment is timely and in accordance with reasonable methods and standards.
  • Meets regularly with the principal investigator, effectively communicating experimental plans, results, and barriers.
  • Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.

Data Collection & Presentation

  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data resulting from experimentation.
  • Performs literature searches to develop information of relevance to the research.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, statistical analyzes etc. for oral presentation at laboratory meetings and conferences.
  • Contributes to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, grant applications, and presentations by drafting portions of the text, and preparing graphs, tables, charts, and slides.

Zebrafish husbandry and maintenance

  • Handles and cares for zebrafish, including breeding, collecting embryos, harvesting tissue, and washing tanks.
  • Uses PCR, molecular cloning, and imaging methods to identify genetic alterations in zebrafish lines and maintains zebrafish stocks through established breeding protocols and careful record keeping.
  • May assist Aquatics Facility staff with feeding and facility maintenance as needed.

  • Orders and maintains stocks of laboratory supplies.
  • Schedules and monitors utilization of laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Monitors equipment and instrument performance; obtains necessary maintenance and repair.

  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
  • Keeps training requirements up-to-date.
