Job Title: Regulatory Compliance Engineer
Job Description
The Regulatory Compliance Engineer leads compliance testing and certification activities for RF and electronic products, with a focus on intentional and unintentional radiators. This role plans and executes transmitter compliance testing, manages environmental and military standard qualification, and coordinates with external test labs and Telecom Certification Bodies to ensure products meet all applicable regulatory requirements. The engineer works cross-functionally to embed compliance into product design early, drives root cause analysis and corrective actions for failures, and produces thorough documentation to support certifications.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute transmitter compliance testing for intentional radiators under FCC Part 15, FCC Part 87 (Aviation), and FCC Part 90 (Private Land Mobile Radio).
- Perform detailed transmitter measurements, including output power, bandwidth, frequency stability, and spurious and harmonic emissions.
- Own and lead FCC Part 15 unintentional radiator testing, including radiated and conducted emissions.
- Coordinate compliance activities with external test laboratories and Telecom Certification Bodies (TCBs) to achieve timely certifications.
- Support and manage environmental qualification testing to military standards such as MIL-STD-810 (or equivalent), including shock, vibration, temperature cycling, humidity, and altitude as applicable.
- Lead debug and root cause analysis for test failures and performance margin issues across RF, EMI, and environmental domains.
- Drive corrective actions such as shielding, grounding, filtering, layout improvements, enclosure and cable mitigation, firmware changes, and calibration tuning to resolve compliance issues.
- Produce comprehensive compliance documentation, including test plans, test procedures, results summaries, FCC exhibits, reports, and certification packages.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with design, hardware, firmware, and systems teams to ensure compliance requirements are incorporated early in the product development lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain test strategies and plans for regulatory, EMI, and environmental qualification testing.
- Use RF and EMC lab equipment to perform measurements, troubleshoot issues, and validate mitigation solutions.
- Engage directly with certification labs and regulatory bodies to clarify requirements, address findings, and maintain alignment on test approaches.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of compliance processes, tools, and best practices for RF design and EMI mitigation.
- Support secure and scalable system development by ensuring regulatory compliance for products that integrate embedded systems, cloud computing, and AI applications.
- Travel up to approximately 10% of the time to compliance and environmental test laboratories as needed.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree or Associate degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Systems Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 3+ years of experience in regulatory compliance or qualification testing for RF and electronic products.
- Experience with FCC intentional radiator certification under Part 15 and/or Part 87 and/or Part 90.
- Hands-on laboratory experience with strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency with RF and EMC instrumentation, including spectrum analyzers, RF power meters, signal generators, antennas, near-field probes, and network analyzers.
- Experience with environmental qualification testing such as MIL-STD-810 or equivalent military standards.
- Experience working directly with certification laboratories and regulatory organizations.
- Solid understanding of RF design principles and EMI mitigation best practices.
- Strong knowledge of EMI troubleshooting, grounding and shielding techniques, filtering strategies, and system-level mitigation methods.
- Demonstrated ability in test planning, documentation, and compliance report generation.
- Ability to be present on-site at the facility and to travel up to approximately 10% for work at compliance and environmental test labs.
- Ability to meet legal work authorization requirements in the United States and to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance in the future, if required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in the aerospace and defense sector.
- International experience with European certification processes and standards.
- Interest in or exposure to cutting-edge technologies such as radars and AI sensing.
- Motivation to work on systems that bridge embedded platforms, cloud computing, and AI applications.
- Desire to collaborate with highly skilled engineers on complex distributed systems challenges.
- Interest in roles with high ownership, fast iteration cycles, and opportunities to lead architecture and innovation initiatives.
Work Environment
The role is primarily on-site at a modern engineering facility, providing access to well-equipped RF, EMC, and environmental test laboratories. The engineer regularly uses advanced instrumentation such as spectrum analyzers, RF power meters, signal generators, antennas, near-field probes, and network analyzers, as well as environmental test equipment that supports MIL-STD-810 or equivalent testing. The position involves up to approximately 10% travel to external compliance and environmental test labs. The work environment emphasizes innovation, technical excellence, and collaboration, offering opportunities to work on cutting-edge technology that bridges embedded systems, cloud computing, and AI applications. The culture supports high ownership, rapid iteration, and meaningful impact, with competitive compensation, equity options, and a strong focus on integrity and long-term growth. Appropriate professional attire is expected in lab and office settings, with adherence to safety and laboratory protocols when working with test equipment and environmental chambers.
