Salary Range: $80,000-93,500 annually based on experience

Position Summary

The Staff RN provides outpatient nursing care to students. They will also do the following: triage patients to determine medical condition. Assists physician or CRNP with patient examination as needed. Reviews physician or CRNP orders, lab requests, or follow-up needs with patient. Performs CLIA waived laboratory tests. Administers specified medication, orally or by subcutaneous or intermuscular injection, and notes time and amount on patients'' charts. Performs other duties as assigned. Care is rendered primarily at Main Campus Student Health Services. However, RN may be assigned to any of the two (2) campus sites: Health Science Center or Main Campus.

Essential Functions of Position

  • Provides outpatient-nursing care primarily to Temple University employees. This care includes first aid, as well as nursing assessment of acute and chronic illnesses. Care is rendered on an appointment and walk-in basis.
  • Triages patients for emergency, immediate and follow-up medical care
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms. Obtains and records vital signs, height, weight, temperature and chief complaint. Prepares patients for examination in conformance with provider's needs. May require minimal lifting of patients.
  • Assists in the preparation/maintenance of electronic medical records and documents patient encounters appropriately.
  • Utilizes a computerized medical information system to schedule appointments and to enter data for patient demographics, visit, diagnosis, procedures, immunizations and charges.
  • Provides health education to patients.
  • Controls flow of patients in and out of exam rooms.
  • Assists with exam when requested to by a provider or patient.
  • Performs phlebotomy and prepares lab specimens and lab slips. Obtains dipstick urinalysis and blood specimens as requested by physician, including patients own primary care physicians.
  • Performs CLIA waived laboratory tests such as urine pregnancy, mono-spot, glucose and dipstick analysis as requested by physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Performs drug screening according to applicable laws and policies.
  • Provides routine and allergy injections as ordered by physician.
  • Assists in the development of nursing protocols.
  • Dispenses prescription and over-the-counter medications as ordered by physician.
  • Participates in staff meetings, quality improvement projects and committees as appropriate.
  • Assists in the coordination of outreach in cooperation with other departments, where appropriate, for specific medical issues, e.g., immunization programs and other wellness programing.
  • Promotes health education, illness prevention and overall wellness initiatives throughout the University.
  • Assists in planning and implementation of annual flu shot clinics.
  • Participates in the maintenance of an appropriate formulary by making recommendations for medical and surgical supplies.
  • Works with Human Resources and other University partners to monitor and track health related requirements. Including but not limited to Hepatitis B immunizations, Q Fever, hearing evaluations, police officer exams, tuberculosis screening etc.

Required Education and Experience

Graduate of an accredited nursing school RN program. BS preferred. Registered nurse with current Pennsylvania license required. Minimum 3 or more years clinical experience required, preferably in the area of occupational health, family practice, college health or emergency medicine.

Must have knowledge of workers' compensation laws; local, state, and federal regulatory requirements including OSHA and the Americans with Disabilities Act; experience with systems for maintaining health records; ability to organize and manage the delivery of health care services and knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to occupational health care practice.

This position will be on-site.
