HemeOnc Cellular Therapy Unit (HOCT) L2WB Infusion Room
The Inpatient Registered Nurse Infusion Room Team Lead is an engaged and credentialed member of the Professional Nursing Organization and is responsible for autonomous practice directed by the professional tenets of practitioner, leader/decision maker, scientist and transferor. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide evidence-based care and to continuously monitor and evaluate practice to ensure safe passage of patients that is in the best interest of populations served. The Infusion Room Team Lead ensures safe, timely, and efficient chemotherapy administration by performing chemotherapy checks, managing scheduling and throughput, supporting staffing needs, and serving as a central clinical resource for providers, schedulers, and nursing staff. This role bridges clinical care, operations, and scheduling to prevent errors, optimize patient flow, and improve patient safety and experience in this unique ambulatory and inpatient hybrid patient care setting. Provide care coordination, oversight, and delivery across the Inpatient Infusion Suite.
HemeOnc Cellular Therapy Unit is part of the Dartmouth Cancer Center at D-H, one of only 57 designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the USA. Level 2 Wing B Infusion (L2WB INF) is a 6-chair and one private patient room mini-infusion suite associated with the 32 bed HemeOnc Cellular Therapy Unit. A unique hybrid patient care area, this space assists with the throughput of HemeOnc patients. Through this infusion suite patients receive chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and CAR T-Cell Therapy. Similar to an infusion center, these patients may also receive supportive care during their appointment in this space. These highly specialized staff will also have the opportunity to resource on the inpatient unit, assist with off unit chemotherapy, and function as an ambulatory infusion nurse.
Responsibilities
Chemotherapy Oversight & Clinical Review Perform chemotherapy checks for patients receiving treatment in the infusion center and on inpatient units. Plan, coordinate, administer (as applicable), and sign off on chemotherapy administered off-unit. Review chemotherapy orders, therapy plans (Beacon), and treatment protocols for accuracy and appropriateness - not solely signature status. Support chemotherapy administration for non-chemotherapy-certified RN assignments as needed. Scheduling & Throughput Coordination Coordinate patient throughput, including: AdmissionsAdd-on appointmentsChemotherapy and infusion appointments Complete look-ahead schedule reviews to identify and resolve conflicts proactively. Review infusion room schedules to ensure: Appropriate patient volume and throughput Correct appointment length relative to chemotherapy regimen Safe spacing and staffing coverage Appropriately triage add-on requests (within 24 hours or within 3 days, as clinically indicated). Pre-Treatment Patient Review For each scheduled patient, conduct a comprehensive review including: Treatment ReadinessVerify Treatment ConsentReview recent provider notes to understand current clinical statusConfirm last MD/APP visit occurred within the required timeframeIdentify active infections, recent hospitalizations or clinical issues that may impact treatmentIdentify documentation indicating potential treatment delays or changesLaboratory ReviewVerify timing and completeness of required labsIdentify need for new lab orders and coordinate pre-appointment lab draws when possibleVascular Access CoordinationCoordinate access appointments as needed Provider and Scheduler Support Serve as the primary point of contact for appointment and scheduling-related questions. Coordinate provider follow-up related to chemotherapy readiness and scheduling concerns. Support approval processes for scheduling chemotherapy and infusions. Provide education, guidelines, and support documents to scheduling staff. Follow up on missed steps, scheduling errors, or incomplete processes to ensure resolution. Quality, Safety & Communication Identify and address gaps in scheduling, orders, labs, or documentation that could impact patient safety. Communicate effectively with providers, pharmacists, nurses, and schedulers to resolve issues in real time. Support continuous improvement in chemotherapy workflows, scheduling accuracy, and patient throughput. Performs other duties as required or assigned.
