Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children is Hawaii's only maternity, newborn and pediatric specialty hospital. It is well recognized as Hawaii's leader in the care of women, infants and children. With 243 beds, the not-for-profit hospital delivers 6,000 babies a year, and is also a medical teaching and research facility. Specialty services for patients throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Region include intensive care for infants and children, 24-hour emergency pediatric and adult care, critical care air transport and high-risk perinatal care. Over 1,500 employees and more than 630 physicians provide specialty care at Kapiolani. The hospital is home to the Kapiolani Women's Center and the Women's Cancer Center, and offers numerous community programs and services, such as specialty pediatric clinics, the Kapiolani Child Protection Center and the Sex Abuse Treatment Center.

The Family Birth Center at Kapiolani is dedicated to providing quality, comprehensive and family-centered obstetrical care, specializing in high-risk and high-volume labor and delivery. This department is composed of the Labor & Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum and Nursery units and provides tertiary, level III perinatal services as well as obstetrical care for antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum patients. The team of professional staff at the Family Birth Center supports and educates patients and families to facilitate the optimal health of both mothers and newborns.

This opportunity is for the experienced nurse who has a desire to become a Labor and Delivery Nurse, without previous perinatal nursing experience. This program is designed to support the learner throughout the transition process from novice to advanced beginner and consists of a blended learning approach which incorporates the following integral components: didactic instruction, preceptor based clinical practicum, AWHONN Perinatal Orientation Education Program online modules, case-based simulation training, and rotations to various specialty areas. All training methodologies are geared towards enhancing the learner's exposure to different populations of perinatal patients with varying compound health problems and towards developing relationships among the multidisciplinary health care team. The program will be 16 weeks in duration and will require a two-year residency/work commitment upon successful completion. The outcome of this training will provide the nurse with the opportunity to provide comprehensive care to perinatal patients throughout the labor and delivery spectrum.
