  • Shift / Schedule: Night shift, 18:45 07:15 (3 12 Hours); 36 hours only

Job Summary

This is a PCU (Progressive Care Unit) travel nursing contract position on a cardiac/step-down unit. The unit manages a wide range of cardiac and vascular patient diagnoses, including Atrial Fibrillation, CHF, CAD, Aortic stenosis/regurgitation, Mitral Regurgitation/Stenosis, Endocarditis, Cardiomyopathy, PVD/PAD, Vasculitis, Carotid stenosis, Venous stasis, and sheath management/removal. The unit performs and supports special procedures including CABG, AVR, MVR, TAVR, Mitral Clip, LAAO (Watchman procedure), VATS, Carotid endarterectomy, FEM-POP bypass, Amputations, other vascular surgeries, cardiac surgeries, thoracic surgeries, general thoracic surgery, Post Cath, Post DCCV, Post electrophysiology procedures, and Pacemaker placements. Unit systems in use include Pyxis, EPIC, and SBAR. Scrub color is Navy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care on a cardiac/step-down PCU unit with patient ratios that vary per acuity: 1:4 for surgical step-down and 1:5 6 for lower acuity.
  • Manage cardiac drips (no titration required as baseline; titration capability also utilized).
  • Perform and assist with sheath removal and femoral sheath management.
  • Interpret and manage dysrhythmias.
  • Manage Post MI, Pre/Post Cardiac Cath patients.
  • Provide non-invasive airway management including external CPAP/BiPAP, nasal cannula, and chest tube management (Emerson/Pleuravac).
  • Utilize unit equipment including Arterial lines, Doppler, Bladder scanner, EKG, Femoral sheaths, TR band, Fem-stop, Chest tubes, and Epicardial Pacing Wires.
  • Follow unit float rotation not first to float.
  • Meet weekend requirement of 4 weekends per 4 weeks (flexible).
  • Contract staff will be assigned and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team. Contract staff may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster. Consolidation to the Centralized Office mid-contract may occur and contract staff may be preassigned to units as needed.

Education Requirements

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience on the cardiac floor required.
  • Traveler experience required UNLESS traveler has more than 24 months of cardiac experience.
  • Locals accepted.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Night shift: 18:45 07:15; 36 hours per week only (3 12-hour shifts)
  • Patient ratios vary per acuity: 1:4 for surgical step-down; 1:5 6 for lower acuity
  • Float requirement: Will follow unit rotation not first to float
  • Weekend requirement: 4 per 4 weeks (flexible)
  • Unit orientation: 24 hours
  • Contract staff may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters as part of Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments

Important Notes

  • RTO after booking is not allowed and is not allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in a contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
  • Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty.
