  • Shift / Schedule: Nights, 3x12 Hours (18:45 07:15)

Job Summary

This is a Medical/Surgical Oncology unit (MS/Onc) primarily serving Medical Surgical patients with Oncology history. The unit operates with a daily census of 42 and target nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:6; during times of increased census, typical ratios may be higher. Contract staff will be assigned equally to the home unit staff to ensure that patients are covered with a registered nurse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to a general medical-surgical patient population with oncology history, including administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection.
  • Care for patients presenting with diagnoses including AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain, OD, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, FTT, Diabetic foot ulcers, and Heparin drips.
  • Perform and manage colostomy care, accessing ports, blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, Heparin and Insulin administration, surgical drains, and chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac).
  • Manage nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management; maintain isolation precautions and wound care/wound vac.
  • Float as required to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding, such as inpatient holding in the ED, or any alternate medical patient care location.
  • Be available for call if called off on a pre-scheduled shift; shifts called out will need to have make-up shifts rescheduled.
  • Work every other weekend as required.
  • Be assigned and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster.
  • May be preassigned to units as needed following any consolidation to the centralized office mid-contract.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Utilize unit systems including PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR for medication, documentation, and communication.

Education Requirements

  • Active RN License required
  • ONC Certification required (Oncology Nursing Certification traveler must have Onc Cert)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty
  • Flu vaccination required (Medical/Religious Exemptions only)

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required
  • First-time travelers accepted

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts (18:45 07:15)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Call required if called off on a pre-scheduled shift
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED or any alternate medical patient care location
  • Contract staff will be assigned and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster
  • Scrubs: Navy Blue and White
  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts)
  • RTO after booking is not allowed and is not allowed to be worked out onsite; any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in a contract cancel and DNR
