Provides on call registered nursing support outside of regular business hours to meet patient care and operational needs across assigned departments or service lines. Utilizes clinical nursing knowledge and judgment to assess situations, respond to patient or operational needs, coordinate care, and support timely, safe, and effective outcomes. Adheres to Mercy policies, approved protocols, applicable professional practice standards, and nursing scope of practice.

Registered Nurse-On Call (EXEMPT)

Location: Mercy Hospital Southeast, Cape Girardeau, MO

Department: Operating Room Complex

Status: Full-Time Salary Exempt*

This unique role is designed to provide a schedule consisting of 7 days "on" and 7 days "off". During the "on" week, RN will be scheduled to work 24 hours (three 8-hour shifts), as well as provide call coverage for 7 consecutive days Mon-Sun, performing on-call duties and end of shift relief, for cases extending past normal operating hours. This schedule will be followed by 7 days off without call and/or scheduled shifts. RN will be salary exempt and paid as full-time status.

***30-minute response time is required. Staying in house is not required***

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of relevant registered nursing experience in an acute, outpatient, procedural, or specialty care setting aligned with the assigned department or service line. Experience must demonstrate the ability to practice independently within defined on‑call responsibilities.

  • Required Education: Graduate of an accredited school or college of nursing.

  • Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Missouri. Is personally responsible for obtaining, and maintaining, a current Missouri RN license and/or compact licensure in which nursing duties are performed. Must meet all state board of nursing requirements.

  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association. AORN Certification preferred. Other unit specific certifications such as ACLS as required. 

  • Other: 

  • Must be readily available outside of business hours during call shift.

  • Must respond promptly to on-call notifications for surgical cases, ensuring readiness within required timeframes. 30-minute response time is required.

  • Must be able to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.

  • Must work well within a team and delegate tasks appropriately.

  • Physical requirements/demands:

    • Position requires individuals to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.

    • Position requires prolonged standing and walking each shift.

    • Position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively in time‑sensitive situations.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency with electronic health records and related clinical systems.

  • Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaboration with the care team.

  • Physical ability to perform essential nursing functions, including standing, walking, and assisting with patient care or equipment as required by the role.

  • On‑call role with variable hours based on departmental coverage needs.

  • May require remote work, on‑site presence, or a combination, depending on assignment.

  • Must be able to respond within established response‑time expectations.

Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 185 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who wanted to help the poor women and children of Dublin. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill her dreams.
