About this position

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing compassionate quality care that is customer and family focused. The RN assesses, diagnoses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents care of customers according to hospital and care center policies and standards of professional nursing practices. The RN is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered. The RN defines, implements, and improves practice standards and environment of care while promoting exceptional customer care. Duties may vary based on the assigned customer care center which may include differences in the required specific clinical skills. Actively and consistently demonstrates the mission, vision, values and guiding principles of Maple Grove Hospital.

SPECIFIC NICU ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Reviews maternal prenatal history and collects current signs/symptoms of the newborn.
  • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and

evaluate customer plan of care.

  • Performs transition, admission, discharge and transfer assessments while considering

both physical and psychosocial elements of newborn and family.

  • Recognizes risk factors, change in status and interventions appropriate for newborn care.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows

adverse symptomatology of the newborn.

  • Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes newborn until the physician or NNP is

available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.

  • Records customer's vital signs, assessments, patient care and interventions as ordered.
  • Works directly with physicians and NNP, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing,

treatments and interventions.

  • Participates and collaborates in multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, IM and IV) medications and records

prescribed medications.

  • Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy.
  • Demonstrates phlebotomy skills.
  • Provides IV therapy.
  • Provides bedside care.
  • Performs Point of Care testing.
  • Operates, maintains and discontinues proper supplies and appropriate medical

equipment to care for customers.

  • Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
  • Initiates family education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches families and

significant others how to manage their newborn's care or illness by explaining: posttreatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of

medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare

professionals for follow-up treatment.

  • Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in

the appropriate format in Epic.

The transport RN provides quality nursing care, treatment, and stabilization of critically ill patients,

in conjunction with fellow team members, during transport. The transport RN will oversee all

aspects of patient care during transport, and is responsible for organizing, implementing, and

coordinating patient care as directed by the Advanced Practice Provider/Neonatologist for the

purpose of stabilization of the

transfer.

SPECIFIC NICU TRANSPORT ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Demonstrates leadership
  • Performs advanced knowledge in Neonatal Resuscitation
  • Performs advanced knowledge in post-delivery care of the critical infant
  • Critically assess, plan, and implement care delivery to the critical infant
  • Attends deliveries of high-risk infants and perform cares to stabilize and support

admission to the NICU

  • Able to communicate patient progress, critical findings, and changes in condition to

multiple disciplines effectively throughout transport

  • Able to complete all nursing assessments and maintain therapeutic and emergent

interventions effectively throughout transport

  • Maintain clinical competence across all aspects of care. Includes assisting with

advanced resuscitation, ventilator management, assisting with airway management, and

stabilization of infant

  • Provide effective communication to families on plan, implementation, and stabilization of

infant through transport

  • Promote a safe and open working environment that encourages improvements and

safety to infant throughout transport

  • Develop and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally through

accountability, communication, motivation, positivity, and professionalism

  • Perform physical requirements in confined spaces and under adverse environmental

conditions

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to safety procedures set forth by North Memorial

Requirements

Education

Associate's degree in nursing; bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.

Experience

Internal Applicants

  • Minimum of 2 years Level III NICU experience
  • Maintain a work agreement of .75 FTE or greater
  • Minimum of 1 year of Resource preferred
  • Compliance with transport weight policy: Maximum weight of 215 pounds in full uniform

External Applicants

  • Minimum of 3 years Level III NICU experience
  • Maintain a work agreement of .75 FTE or greater
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience attending deliveries and providing immediate post

resuscitative care

  • Current (or within the last 2 years) experience with EMS ground/air transport of infants
  • Compliance with transport weight policy: Maximum weight of 215 pounds in full uniform
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain composure in high stress situations, acts quickly in response to critical situations. Solid PC skills to include MS applications, Internet, etc.
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to express ideas and information (both in written and oral form), clearly and concisely in a manner appropriate to the audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict in a positive manner. Has an awareness of, responds to, and considers the needs, feelings and capabilities of others.
  • Ability to be accountable for quality customer service and respond appropriately to a variety of personalities and situations.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak effectively in English.

Licensure/Certification

  • Current licensure and registration as an RN in the State of MN. Current BLS certification for all areas of nursing practice required.
  • Current certification required for the following areas of nursing practice:
  • Emergency Care Center - ACLS, TNCC, PALS
  • Intensive Care Center & MSCC Lead - ACLS
  • L&D - NRP, AWHONN's Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring Course (one time only) - Experienced L&D nurses will obtain within 6 months and new L&D nurses will obtain at 1 year of experience
  • NICU- NRP, STABLE (one time)
  • PCC/PACU/ENDO - ACLS, PALS
