Job Summary

This is a Medical Surgical / Oncology travel nursing position serving primarily Medical Surgical patients with Oncology history. The unit carries a daily census of 42, with a target nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6. During times of increased census, typical ratios may be higher. Contract staff will be assigned equally to the home unit staff to ensure that patients are covered with a registered nurse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Care for a primary patient population with general medical-surgical diagnoses, including patients with oncology history.
  • Administer chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection as needed.
  • Manage and care for patients presenting with diagnoses including AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain, OD, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, FTT, Diabetic foot ulcers, and Heparin drips.
  • Perform and manage clinical skills including Colostomy care, Accessing Ports, Blood Product Administration, Central line blood draw, Peripheral Line Care/Management, PICC line management, Heparin, Insulin, Surgical drains, Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), Nasal Cannula, Non-invasive airway management, Isolation Precautions, and Wound Care/Wound Vac.
  • Utilize unit systems including PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR for medication administration, documentation, and communication.
  • Float to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding, such as inpatient holding in the ED, or any alternate medical patient care location.
  • Work every other weekend as required.
  • Fulfill call requirement: if called off on a prescheduled shift, call is required. Shifts called out will need to have make-up shifts rescheduled.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Be assigned and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; contract staff may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster.
  • Mid-contract consolidation to the Centralized Office may occur and contract staff may be preassigned to units as needed.
