Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Job Summary

This Medical Surgical/Oncology unit primarily serves Medical Surgical patients with Oncology history. The unit maintains a target nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6, with a daily census of 42. During times of increased census, typical ratios may be higher. Contract staff will be assigned equally to home unit staff to ensure patients are covered with a registered nurse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide care to patients with general medical-surgical diagnoses as the primary patient population
  • Administer chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection as needed
  • Care for patients presenting with diagnoses including AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain, OD, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, FTT, Diabetic foot ulcers, and Heparin drips
  • Perform colostomy care, access ports, administer blood products, perform central line blood draws, and manage peripheral lines and PICC lines
  • Manage Heparin and Insulin drips, surgical drains, and chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • Apply nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management techniques
  • Maintain isolation precautions and perform wound care including wound vac management
  • Float to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding, such as inpatient holding in the ED, or any alternate medical patient care location
  • Respond to call requirement if called off on a prescheduled shift; shifts called out will need to have make-up shifts rescheduled
  • Work every other weekend as required
  • Attend monthly staff meetings
  • Be assigned and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster
  • May be preassigned to units as needed; consolidation to the Centralized Office mid-contract may occur
  • Utilize unit systems including PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR for medication, documentation, and communication

Required Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Experience in an inpatient setting is required
  • Med/Surg experience

Preferred Skills

Education Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) License required
  • ONC Certification required traveler must have ONC cert and must be able to administer chemo if needed
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
  • Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Night shift: 3x12 hours, 18:45 7:15
  • Every other weekend required
  • Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift
  • Float required to similar units and alternate care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED or any alternate medical patient care location
  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts)
  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white
  • Flu vaccine required (medical/religious exemptions only)
  • Contract staff may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster
  • RTO after booking is not allowed and may not be worked out onsite; any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could result in contract cancellation and DNR
