Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Oncology

Location: Wilmington, NC

Job Summary

This is a Medical Surgical Oncology travel nursing position serving primarily Medical Surgical patients with Oncology history. The manager is seeking Med/Surg skilled RNs for this MS/Onc unit, with target patient ratios of 1:6. Daily Census is 42; during times of increased census, typical ratios may be higher. Contract staff will be assigned equally to the home unit staff to ensure that patients are covered with a registered nurse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Care for a primary patient population with general medical-surgical diagnoses and oncology history
  • Administer chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection as needed
  • Manage patient diagnoses including AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain, OD, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, FTT, Diabetic foot ulcers, and Heparin drips
  • Perform colostomy care, access ports, administer blood products, perform central line blood draws, manage peripheral lines and PICC lines
  • Manage Heparin and Insulin drips, surgical drains, and chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • Provide nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
  • Maintain isolation precautions and perform wound care/wound vac management
  • Float to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding, including inpatient holding in the ED, or any alternate medical patient care location
  • Attend monthly staff meetings
  • Report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster as assigned to Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team
  • Reschedule make-up shifts for any shifts called out
  • Utilize unit systems: PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR for medication, documentation, and communication

Required Certifications

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates accepted

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Night shift position (3x12 Hours, 18:45 7:15)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding, such as inpatient holding in the ED, or any alternate medical patient care location
  • Contract staff will be assigned and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster
  • Consolidation to the Centralized Office mid-contract may occur and contract staff may be preassigned to units as needed
  • Scrubs: Navy Blue and White
  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts)

Important Notes

  • Chemo certification is NOT required however, traveler must have ONC cert and must be able to administer chemo if needed
  • Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty
  • RTO (Release Time Off) after booking is not allowed and is not allowed to be worked out onsite; any call offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in a cancel and DNR (Do Not Return)
