Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg/Telemetry (Travel Assignment)

Duration: 13 weeks
Location: 777 Hemlock Street, Macon, GA 31201
Schedule: 3x12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM) | 36 hours/week


Facility Overview

  • 637 licensed beds
  • Level I Trauma Center
  • Teaching hospital
  • Certified Chest Pain Center
  • Designated Stroke Center

Unit Information

  • Med-Surg units range from 20–36 beds
  • Minimum experience: 2 years Med-Surg/Telemetry RN experience required
  • First-time travelers accepted

Patient Population

  • General Med-Surg and Telemetry patients
  • Acute and chronic conditions
  • Common comorbidities: diabetes, hypertension, infections, electrolyte imbalances
  • Cardiac patients: post-cardiac catheterization, CHF, atrial fibrillation
  • Post-surgical patients: general, orthopedic, trauma

Staffing Ratios

  • RN: 1:4–6
  • LPN: 1:4–6
  • CNA: up to 1:14

Required Certifications & Licensure

  • Active RN license
  • BLS (required)
  • ACLS (preferred; required to pass EKG competency exam during onboarding)
  • Med-Surg certification (preferred)

Required Skills

  • Tracheostomy care
  • Chest tube management
  • Peripheral IV insertion and maintenance
  • Glucommander use
  • Strong assessment, time management, and care coordination
  • Discharge planning and patient education

Telemetry Skills:

  • Cardiac rhythm monitoring and interpretation
  • Post-cath care, including TR bands and groin site management (no sheath pulls)

Drips:

  • Insulin, heparin, Cardizem, amiodarone, milrinone, digoxin, nicardipine
  • May titrate for heart rate (not blood pressure)

Support Services

  • CNAs assist with vitals, glucose checks, hygiene, mobility, feeding, and patient safety
  • Unit Secretary available 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM; house-wide coverage overnight
  • Charge nurse (may carry patient load)
  • Lab/Phlebotomy: primarily lab-drawn; RNs draw from central lines
  • PICC team available (no IV team)
  • Resource and discharge nurses available
  • Respiratory Therapy, Hospitalists, and Intensivists available 24/7
  • Central telemetry monitoring

Technology & Equipment

  • EMR: Epic
  • IV Pumps: Alaris
  • Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
  • Monitors: Philips
  • Additional equipment: VS3 vital sign monitors, Nova glucose meters

Floating

  • Required to float to all Med-Surg/Telemetry units (including Baldwin) as needed

Orientation

  • 1 day general orientation (includes educational modules)
  • 2 days unit-specific orientation

Scheduling Details

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
  • 12-hour shifts
  • 6-week schedule cycle
  • Weekend requirement: 6 shifts per 6 weeks
  • No on-call requirements

Holiday Requirements

  • Must work approximately 75% of holidays
  • Includes one shift for each major holiday group:
    • Thanksgiving (or following day)
    • Christmas Eve/Day
    • New Year’s Eve/Day
