  • Pay Rate: $67.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Shift / Schedule: Day Shift, 12-hour shifts (06:45 19:15), 3 12

Job Summary

This is a Labor and Delivery travel nursing position on a fast-paced, high-acuity Birthing Care Unit supporting obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for all intrapartum and for high-risk antepartum and postpartum care, as well as under-16-weeks high-risk patients on the high-risk maternity unit. The unit operates at a volume exceeding 300 births per month, with an average of 20 births in 24 hours, 30 40 admits, and 40 visits per day across 20 rooms. Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence on this unit. The Birthing Care Unit includes an obstetrical triage unit to allow for screening of patients prior to admission and to perform routine outpatient procedures such as antenatal fetal surveillance, intravenous hydration, and medication administration. Scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean Births and rescue cervical cerclage are performed. This unit is very fast-paced, busier and higher acuity than might be normally expected it may not be realistic for nurses to take 48-hour contracts on this unit due to how busy it is. A strong preference exists for RNs with circulate-to-OR experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide intrapartum and high-risk antepartum and postpartum care for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater
  • Care for under-16-weeks high-risk patients on the high-risk maternity unit
  • Perform screening of patients prior to admission through the obstetrical triage unit
  • Perform routine outpatient procedures including antenatal fetal surveillance, intravenous hydration, and medication administration
  • Assist with scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean Births and rescue cervical cerclage
  • Circulate in the OR as needed
  • Perform sterile vaginal exams
  • Provide immediate newborn care
  • Manage double labor assignments as a daily occurrence
  • Float as needed to Special Maternity Care high-risk OB unit

Required Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience to be comfortable working on this unit, as it can be challenging for less experience (3 years preferred)
  • EPIC experience required
  • Experience in a large/high-volume Labor and Delivery setting (must have experience with >300 births per month)
  • Competency in circulate (circulate to OR experience strongly preferred)
  • Competency in sterile vaginal exam
  • Competency in immediate newborn care
  • Proficiency with unit systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR
  • First-time travelers accepted (but must have experience in a large/high-volume similar setting)

Education Requirements

  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required
  • AWHONN Intermediate certification required
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification required
  • Active RN License required

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience required (3 years preferred)
  • Experience in a large/high-volume Labor and Delivery unit with >300 births per month required
  • First-time travelers accepted provided they have experience in a large/high-volume similar setting

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Difficult unit fast-paced, high acuity; busier than might be normally expected
  • Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence
  • Patient ratios: 2:1; average 20 births in 24 hours, 30 40 admits, 40 visits/day, 20 rooms
  • 12-hour day shifts: 06:45 19:15
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend; minimum of 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
  • Float required as needed to Special Maternity Care high-risk OB unit
  • Call requirement: None
  • RTO (Return to Origin): 7 days max for AYA Auto Offer
  • Scrubs provided (blue)
  • Unit orientation: 24 hours
  • Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)
  • COVID-19: Not required

Important Notes

  • RTO after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in a contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
  • Unit will accept 13 26 week contracts.
  • This unit may not be realistic for nurses to take 48-hour contracts due to how busy it is.
