Job Summary

Position Summary

Single departmental function supervision and/or shift supervision in accordance with hospital policy. Responsible for the daily administration of tasks, scheduling and problem solving related to assigned areas. Position provides leadership to the hospital staff in the absence of the Department Directors and Administration. Responsible for the coordination of care resources, problem resolution, adequate staffing and communication to Department Directors and Administration with issues of concern. Serves as an administrative representative for the hospital. Serves as liaison with Staff, Management and the Medical Staff.

Responsibilities

Interprets and implements organizational goals.

Identifies and prioritizes what needs to be done in terms of patient care and unit tasks.

Estimates patient workloads and ensures staffing reflects workloads.

Interprets and ensures compliance with policies & procedures, standards of practice and standards of care necessary and relevant to the department.

Assists with ensuring quality, customer service focused care is delivered from pre-admission to post-discharge of patients.

Provides data, information and reports in a timely manner.

Coordinates all patient admissions to include transfers to and from other facilities, bed assignments, and physician orders; obtains clinical, demographic and third party payor information and authorization as necessary.

Management: Responsible for Acuity Management. Resolves team conflict by helping staff focus on what is best for the patient and the unit. Applies team-building skills and develops self-directed teams. Assists in new employee orientation teaching customer service goals, efficiency, accountability, clinical skills and conflict resolution. Identifies poor and positive performance and acts as first line coach providing feedback and counseling. Keeps staff informed by frequent communication of policy changes, organizational goals, customer service issues, and department performance issues. Assists in maintaining productivity guidelines. Assists case managers and staff in discharge planning (from a resource consumption perspective) Provides an adequate number of competent staff to meet patient care needs in a fiscally responsible manner. Ensures staff compliance with regulatory agency requirements. Mentors staff on the day-to-day resolution of issues and concerns.

Interpersonal: Acts as liaison between physicians, staff, patients, family members, administration and other departments. Interacts with admitting physician, provides alternatives to inpatient admission when appropriate.

Assists physicians in matters relative to the admission process, discharge planning and utilization management.

Problem Solving: Identifies, proposes solutions, and assists in implementation of ideas for improvements in patient care and department/hospital operations. Functions as a patient advocate. Participates in the successful implementation of changes. Participates in hospital activities to improve efficiency, customer service, and program development/revenue enhancement. Identifies opportunities and implements strategies to decrease waste in supplies, equipment and linen use. Assists staff in identifying patient problems and making good patient care decisions. Directs staff in maintaining a safe environment and customer satisfaction when staffing or resources need to be stretched. Analyzes a complex problem or project and is able to identify the consequences of various solutions. Participates in hospital wide process improvement activities. Reviews patient admissions, including observation charts for medical necessity and appropriateness. Provides education to staff and physicians pertaining to utilization management.

Personal Performance: Provides leadership and role models a standard of excellence for the staff. Educates and mentors staff and acts as resource person on unit and elsewhere in hospital. Accepts and completes projects/assignments as requested by CNO and/or director. Recognizes the need for and obtains additional resources or guidance as necessary. Serves as hospital representative to employees to ensure continuous communication and support with hospital administrators and department directors.

Qualifications

Special Skills:  Demonstrated professional development over time.  Effective interpersonal and communication skills.  Computer skills preferred.  Ability to effectively implement change and manage departmental budgets.  Must be able to independently make decisions in high-stress situations.  Minimal degree of supervision required.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Graduate from a Nursing School

Experience: Three years of relevant clinical nursing experience.

Licensure/Certifications:  Must have License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona.  CPR required and ACLS required or must obtain within six months of hire.

Preferred Requirements

Education: BSN

Experience: Management experience and one year supervisory experience

Licensure/Certifications:  PALS certification/registration also preferred.
