Reports To: Nurse Manager / Director of Women’s ServicesPosition SummaryThe Mother Baby Educator is responsible for providing education, support, and guidance to postpartum mothers and families regarding newborn care, maternal recovery, breastfeeding, and parenting skills. The educator collaborates with nursing staff, physicians, lactation consultants, and interdisciplinary teams to promote positive maternal and infant health outcomes through evidence-based education and compassionate care.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized and group education to postpartum mothers and families on newborn care, feeding, safe sleep, maternal recovery, and infant safety.
  • Educate patients regarding breastfeeding techniques, formula feeding, pumping, and newborn nutrition.
  • Develop and implement educational materials, classes, and teaching programs for mothers and families.
  • Assess learning needs and adapt educational methods to meet cultural, developmental, and individual patient needs.
  • Collaborate with nurses, physicians, lactation consultants, social workers, and case managers to support patient care plans.
  • Reinforce discharge instructions and ensure patient understanding prior to discharge.
  • Promote evidence-based maternal and newborn care practices.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to patient education and patient satisfaction.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient education and interventions in electronic medical records.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff regarding postpartum and newborn education standards.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, patient safety standards, and regulatory guidelines.
QualificationsEducation
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Licensure & Certifications
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Certification in Maternal Newborn Nursing (RNC-MNN), Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), or childbirth education preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of mother-baby, postpartum, labor and delivery, or women’s health nursing experience preferred.
  • Experience providing patient and family education preferred.
  • Breastfeeding education and support experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of maternal-newborn nursing care and postpartum education.
  • Excellent teaching, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide compassionate and culturally sensitive patient education.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist patients as needed.
  • Ability to lift and carry educational materials and newborn care equipment.
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
Work EnvironmentThis position works primarily in a hospital mother-baby or women’s services environment with exposure to postpartum patients, newborns, infectious diseases, and clinical care settings.
