Recruiting a Gastroenterology Recruitment Registered Nurse to work in the Gastroenterology Department at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Bethesda, MD, providing care to family members of Active Duty heroes and retirees. The Gastroenterology Recruitment Registered Nurse positions are full-time, not to exceed 80 hrs/2 weeks.

At WRNMMC, contract employees shall be required to work varying shifts (8 to 12 hours) weekdays in a two-week period. Scheduling is always based on the needs of the MTF and must be coordinated through the requisite department POC and MTF COR. The specific schedule for each two-week period will be provided one month in advance.




Duties of the Gastroenterology Recruitment Registered Nurse: Recruitment Nurse shall provide the following services and in strict compliance with standing orders and protocols set forth by the MTF, and IAW JC guidelines to include, but shall not
  • necessarily be limited to the following:
  • Responsible for recruiting Virtual Colonoscopy (VC) patients to an approved research protocol.
  • Responsible for consenting participants on the day of the procedure or during their walkin hours.
  • Manages patient care including coordinating and implementing patient screening for risk factors prior to procedures, explaining virtual and optical colonoscopy program
  • procedures and pre-procedure instructions to patients and families, obtaining informed consent forms for the procedures, coordinating follow-up care after procedures, and related consent for ongoing research.
  • Coordinates care with referring service department staff.
  • Provides patient education to patients/families, assuring continuity of care including health assessment, promotion and preventative interventions.
  • Enforces adherence to hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Performs and records pertinent history and physical examination on patients referred for virtual colonoscopy. Screens patients referred for virtual and optical colonoscopy
  • procedures for procedural risk factors including obtaining patient data such as history, physical examination, laboratory and radiographic information as indicated.
  • Explains procedures to patients and family members, obtains informed consent, and serves as a liaison to the family members during the procedure.
  • Assesses psychosocial, cognitive and functional assets and limitations of patients and their family. Plans care to incorporate these needs.
  • Assists the virtual colonoscopy program faculty members in coordinating the scheduling of procedures, performing virtual colonoscopy procedures, assuring timely evaluation of
  • results, and post-procedure care.
  • Follow up on patient post procedure by examining patient directly or via telephone. Coordinates scheduling of conventional colonoscopy with Gastroenterology, as needed.
  • Liaison with radiologic technologists who perform imaging examinations to ensure correct and appropriate procedures and protocols are followed.
  • Works closely with the VC program team, including physicians, nurses, technologists, and research staff.
  • Promotes a department-based improvement program that incorporates patient care standards and meets JCAHO guidelines.
  • Meets personal continuing education and developmental needs.
  • Collaborates with clinical instructors and faculty in planning, guiding, and evaluating medical students clinical experience.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate written patient education materials.
  • Serves as a resource person to staff in other departments In particularly in the Gastroenterology/Colorectal Surgery, health care team - as appropriate.
  • Supports and participates in programs approved by Hospital and University.
  • Supports and/or participates in community outreach programs.
  • Assists with the coordination and implementation of clinical trials, including recruiting patients, screening, and coordinating follow-up for ongoing research.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations including participation in at least one annual national Colon Cancer Screening/Gastroenterology conference. Travel not to
  • exceed $3000 is authorized.
  • Create and establish patient appointments for Clinic patients, Optical and Virtual Colonoscopies as required.
  • Able to Diagnose, treat, evaluate and manage acute and chronic illness patients.
  • In a clinical environment provide prenatal care, family planning, well-child care services, primary and specialty care services, health-maintenance care for adults, including annual
  • physicals.
  • Coordinate patient care through a continuum and facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Maintain excellent patient assessment skills. Use the nursing process as a basis for professional practice.
  • Demonstrate excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements.
  • Can demonstrate and adhere to peri-operative, infection control and safety policies and procedures used in the MTF and IAW JC guidelines.
  • Schedules referral appointments, arranges for procedures, and performs telephone followup, as appropriate.
  • Can demonstrate good time management skills.
  • QUALIFICATIONS OF THE REGISTERED NURSE (RN) - GASTROENTEROLOGY: Degree/Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing or possess a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience: Possess at least 3 years of nursing experience within the last 5 years, preferably in Gastroenterology. Prefer at least one year of nursing research experience
  • within the last 3 years. Possess experience with Microsoft Excel to create and maintain spreadsheets.
  • Licensure/Registration: Valid unrestricted medical license in at least one state, territory or commonwealth of the U.S. And shall at a minimum be Board eligible.
  • Knowledge of sources for patient care data. Examples are: medical records via ESSENTRIS and CHCS, 24 hour nursing reports, logs, consults and computerized data, RMS
  • Licensure/Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse as required in the TO.
