WHO WE ARE

Montgomery County Department of Recreation is a nationally recognized and award-winning agency with a mission to provide high quality, diverse, and accessible community-based programs, activities, and services that serve the recreation and leisure needs of the Montgomery County community. The department manages 39 facilities including recreation centers, senior centers, and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and provides thousands of programs such as out-of-school activities, aquatics, classes, youth and adult sports programs and leagues, senior programs, and therapeutic recreation.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Department is seeking a dynamic and experienced, full-time Recreation Coordinator, whose skills and knowledge will be utilized to support a wide range of programs and services in our community recreation centers. Our Community Recreation Centers Coordinators are responsible for facility operations, maintenance, and scheduled improvements; developing, planning, and scheduling activities; staffing, registrations, and financial activities.

What Youll Be Doing

Successful candidates will have experience and demonstrated abilities in:

  • scheduling, monitoring and ensuring compliance with rules for facilities, programs and activities;
  • supporting special events, including setting up and breaking down, transporting storing, maintaining and/or performing simple repairs on equipment;
  • developing and delivering program surveys and evaluations;
  • assisting with program registration using recreation software systems, and maintaining program and related records;
  • facilitating outreach, social equity and inclusion for vulnerable, under-/un-represented populations; and
  • instructing and leading recreation programs and activities.

Selections will be made based on the breadth of candidates' skills and experience in:

  • organizing, motivating, directing, and encouraging employees/volunteers and youth participants in meaningful work and enrichment activities;
  • providing direction and guidance to seasonal staff and volunteers through clear articulation of work projects, activities, goals, and related service;
  • assisting with program registration using recreation software systems, and maintaining program and related records;
  • working with program, financial and other guidelines; and
  • supporting/delivering high quality recreation programs and services.

As a leader/organizer of unionized employees, this position has responsibility for:

  • fostering a positive labor relations environment based on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation;
  • maintaining stability of seasonal employees by modeling desired behaviors through consistent and positive work ethic, and by advocating on behalf of the management team; and
  • motivating and providing direction and guidance to employees through clear articulation of work projects goals and related services.

Important Things to Know:

The selected candidates will be required to complete a background investigation and a medical exam prior to appointment.

These positions WILL require work during non- traditional hours to include early mornings, evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays; MAY require work that involves physical demands, occasionally working outdoors in varying weather and extreme temperatures; and the ability to attend meetings or perform work at locations outside of an assigned facility.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, incumbents are responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year of recreation work experience involving planning, organizing, and directing recreational activities or special interest recreation program activities/services.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

  • Experience planning, implementing and evaluating recreation programs.
  • Experience with management and maintenance of recreation facilities.
  • Experience recruiting, training, coaching and evaluating part-time staff and/or volunteers.
  • Experience with recreation registration and/or facility scheduling software systems.

Leave Benefits

Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays. Our leave policies adhere to the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, and we provide six weeks of paid parental leave for new parents.

Retirement Benefits

All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years. Employees in non-public safety positions can participate in retirement plans that contribute up to 12 percent of their annual salary. All employees can also participate in a supplemental retirement plan, the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, to contribute even more to their retirement goals.

Montgomery County employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Participants who meet all requirements may qualify for forgiveness on the remaining balance on their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time in a qualifying public service position.
