JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

The Recreation/Certified Instructor is responsible for organizing, leading, and instructing recreational programs and activities for participants of various ages. This position involves creating a safe, enjoyable, and educational environment while ensuring the effective delivery of recreational programs. The Recreation Instructor will work closely with the community, promoting active lifestyles and encouraging participation in recreational activities.

The Recreation Instructor should demonstrate enthusiasm for recreational programming, the ability to engage participants, and a commitment to promoting health and wellness. This role requires a blend of hands-on instruction, program management, and safety oversight.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Towns needs.

  • Plans, organizes, and leads recreational programs and activities, including sports, fitness classes, games, and other leisure activities.
  • When assigned to Group Fitness: develops choreography and routines and incorporates music.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of participants by enforcing rules, monitoring activities, and responding to emergencies as necessary.
  • Provides instruction and guidance to participants of various skill levels, adapting programs to meet the needs of individuals and groups.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies, ensuring they are used properly and safely.
  • Promotes participation in recreational activities through community outreach, marketing, and engagement efforts.
  • Prepares reports, maintains records, and completes necessary forms related to program attendance, incidents, and other relevant data.
  • Fosters a positive environment that encourages teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal development.
  • Collaborates with other staff members, volunteers, and community partners to enhance program offerings and improve service delivery.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (at job entry)

Education and Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona drivers license.
  • High School Diploma or GED, and at least six (6) months of formal fitness or classroom teaching, or related experience; or, an equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (completed within 30 days of hire date)

  • First Aid;
  • CPR/AED
  • When assigned to Certified or Group Fitness: National Fitness Certification or valid certification for the specific class(es) assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position has been identified as a safety-sensitive position by Human Resources, per State and/or Federal Law. Upon conditional offer of employment, the candidate selected will be required to undergo testing for alcohol and controlled substances within twenty-four (24) hours of the offer.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Recreation sports programs, youth activities and rule interpretation.
  • Human anatomy, kinesiology and training practices and principles.
  • Planning, organizing and problem solving.
  • Equipment and supplies used in youth and adult sports, fitness classes, games and activities.
  • First aid methods and necessary safety precautions used in recreation programming.

SKILLS

  • Providing courteous and efficient service to the public and in responding to inquiries, complaints and requests in a fair, tactful and firm manner.
  • When assigned to Group Fitness: ability to develop fitness routines that incorporates music, tempo, cueing techniques, rhythm, and choreography: ability to develop and implement fitness classes appropriate to the class description and ability level of participants.
  • Supervising multiple games and activities simultaneously.
  • Both verbal and written communication.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Operating basic computer programs.
  • Ability to write reports and fill out forms.
  • Using critical thinking and judgement while assessing situations.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other interested parties sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
